Math Class Notes: Geometry (October 16, 2023)

1. Basic Definitions:
○ Geometry is the branch of mathematics concerning shapes,
sizes, and the properties of space.
○ Key Terms:
■ Point: A location with no size.
■ Line: A straight path extending infinitely in both
directions.
■ Plane: A flat surface that extends infinitely in two
dimensions.
2. Types of Angles:
○ Acute Angle: Less than 90°
○ Right Angle: Exactly 90°
○ Obtuse Angle: More than 90° but less than 180°
○ Straight Angle: Exactly 180°
3. Triangles:
○ Types based on sides:
■ Equilateral: All sides equal.
■ Isosceles: Two sides equal.
■ Scalene: No sides equal.
○ Types based on angles:
■ Acute: All angles acute.
■ Right: One angle is a right angle.
■ Obtuse: One angle is obtuse.
4. Pythagorean Theorem:
○ Formula: (a^2 + b^2 = c^2) (used in right triangles to relate the
lengths of the sides).
5. Quadrilaterals:
○ Types: Squares, rectangles, trapezoids, parallelograms,
rhombuses.
○ Properties: Sum of interior angles in any quadrilateral = 360°.
6. Circles:
○ Key terms: Radius, diameter, circumference.
○ Circumference formula: (C = \pi d) or (C = 2\pi r).
7. Practice Problems:
○ Homework assigned: Solve problems related to triangles and
angle measures.
