Management and General Management or classic management tasks?

• "General management" is a very term that refers to


A) The overall management activities in an organization,
B) The people who is responsible for it (General Managers and their staff)
and
C) An academic or professional focus on broad management activities (the
"helicopter view")
• "Strategic management" is A) An evolution of the strategic planning term
that refers to a new approach to management which privileges a strategic
approach to enterprise problem solving. So, for strategists, strategic
management is the desired approach for general management.

Organizational mission statements—are they a promise, a commitment,


or just a ball of hot air? Form small groups of three to four individuals
and find examples of three different organizational mission statements.
Your first task is to evaluate the mission statements. How do they
compare to the components listed in Exhibit 9-2? Would you describe
each as an effective mission statement? Why? How might you rewrite
each mission statement to make it better?
Your second task is to use the mission statements to describe the types
of corporate and competitive strategies each organization might use to
fulfill that mission statement. Explain your rationale for choosing each
strategy.
