Q1. Prepare a presentation with the group number assigned according to your Serial No.
Group No. Presentation Topic Sr. No.
1 Canal losses in India with suitable data 1-5, 26-30
2 Sodic soils 6-10, 31-35
3 Water-logging problem in India 10-15, 36-40
4 New techniques for Salinity and alkalinity-Reclamation 16-20, 41-45
5 Lining of canals with suitable examples 21-25, 46-50
Q2. A distributary canal takes off from a branch canal having CBL at 204.0 m and FSL at 205.8 m. The
gross commanded area at the head of the distributary is 30,000 hectares, and after each km it is reduced
by 5,000 hectares. Out of this
command, the culturable area is only 75%. The intensity of irrigation for the Rabi and Kharif seasons is
32% and 15% respectively. Design suitable channel sections for the first 3 km of this distributary, assuming
the following data:
(i) Total losses below km 3 = 0.44 cumec.
(ii) Channel losses occur@ 2 cumecs/million square metres of wetted perimeter.
(iii) Kor period for Rabi (wheat) = 4 weeks
(iv) Kor depth for Rabi = 14 cm
{v) Kor period for Kharif (Rice) = 2.5 weeks
(vi) Kor depth for Kharif = 20 cm.
(vii) Manning's n = 0.0225.
(viii) Critical velocity ratio = 0.95.
The ground levels at every 200 metres, along the line of the proposed alignment,
have been obtained and are tabulated in table:
