1. General Information

1.1 Instruction

The U120 Urine Analyzer is a reflectance photometer that analyzes the intensity and color of light
reflected from the reagent areas of a urinalysis reagent strip.

This service manual describes the control and repair of the U120 It is only for well-trained service engineer,
who is experienced in repairing and maintaining instruments for -Diagnostic investigations.

The U120 is a precise, calibrated optical measurement system. The listed operations below must be
accomplished with special attention and precision. If spare parts or accessories are needed, it is absolutely
necessary to use only original spare parts for this instrument.

2.1.1 Sensitivity adjustment

The U120 provide the semiquantitivety results. In some special case, adjustment of sensitivity is necessary
as the requirement of users. We do not recommend adjusting the sensitivity before necessary investigation.

Investigation

If any complaint about the sensitivity of U120 urine analyzer, following investigation should be done prior
to any change on analyzer.

1) Repeat the testing for double confirm.

2) Complaints from comparison with visual testing results.
If the difference between U120 and strip visual result is more than one block, false-positive or false
negative, please adjust the setup in U120 to be the same as visual results.

U120 testing results Urine strip visual results Solution

Negative Positive Increase the sensitivity of U120
Positive Negative Decrease the sensitivity of U120
Low positive High positive Increase the intensity of U120
High positive Low positive Decrease the intensity of U120

Rnage boundary Adjustment

Adjust the U120 urine analyzer as following instruction. The range boundaries are specified as interger and
are changed in steps of 50. The upper boundary value of the next range is defined by the lower boundry of
preceding range, to avoid overlap of two ranges.
Example: the upper boundary of LEU 1+ 2450 is the lower boundary of LEU+/-.

The range boundary interfaces can be entered into by password. Each parameter has different interface
showing parameter code, parameter name, and type of strip, default setup, current setup and High/Low
Reflectivity control.

For example:

1) 3600 is the high reflectivity boundary

2) 0200 is the low reflectivity boundary
3) 2600 is the boundary for divide “negative” and “+/-“
4) 24500 is the boundary for divide “+/-“ and “+”
5) 2100 is the boundary for divide “+” and “2+”
6) 1700 is the boundary for divide “2+” and “3+”

Note: *1.The current boundary may be minor different in each analyzer.

2. Adjust the current boundary by increased 50 (or decreased 50) at 1st step. Repeat the testings to
confirm the new boundary after each change. If the range boundary is still unsatisfied, increased
(or decreased) it by 50 again.
3. The final boundary should be in control range
4. The minimum difference between each boundary should be more than 100.
Example: if the upper range boundary for KET(2+) is 820, the upper range boundary for KET 1+
should be higher than 920, and the lower range boundary for KET (2+) should be lower than 720.

1. The first 8 digits for each parameter should not been changed unless informed by manufacturer.
1) the first 4 digits are for “High Reflectivity”, and 5th-8th digits are for “Low Reflectivity”.
2) The reflectivity of each pad should be in this limited range between “High Reflectivity” and “Low
Reflectivity”. If the reflectivity is out of this range, the testing results will be “strip Error”.
2. The “High Reflectivity” and “Low Reflectivity” should be exactly the same as above table.
3. Do not change “High Reflectivity” and “Low Reflectivity” unless be informed by manufacturer.

2.1.2 Optical Sensor Failure

One of key components in U120 is the LED detection unit. The reflectivity of LED is setup and adjusted to
optimum status before released to users. The analyzers will prompt as “Optical sensor failed” if any serious
influence on LED reflectivity. The tesing results may also be affected by the LED status changes.

The service center is available for service engineer to check the LED status.
Four reasons will cause this issue.
1) Strip Holder is positioned incorrectly on Strip Holder mount
2) The White calibration circle or the surrounded strip holder pollution
3) The LED degeneration
4) The detecting unit contaminated

3.1.6 Install and tighten all 4 screws.

Step 4 Detecting unit contaminated

If both the frequency of Red and Green in out of +/-300 of the value in 3rd Row, that is to say that
maybe the detecting unit is contaminated. Please clean it as the following steps.

4.1 Open the analyzer as the Item 3.1.1 to 3.1.3.

4.2. Using a screwdriver to remove the screws on the board.

4.3. Clean photodiode and the sensor back the board.

Ver 2.0.0 07/2014

4.4. Using a special tool like wire with cotton dipped with alcohol to clean the detecting unit. Please
note not to damage the unit.

4.5 Reinstall the detecting unit and turn on the analyzer. After it finished the self testing, the analyzer
will enter to the initial screen.
4.6 Check the high frequency of the analyzer in 357852 to see if it is OK after cleaning the detecting
unit.
If the high frequency can meet the request and the optical sensor failed is disappeared, that the
detecting unit is OK.
If clean the detecting unit can’t work and the “Optical Sensor failed” occurs again, we may need to
change the Strip Carrier and Detection Unit for it.

2.2 Data download instruction

The results in U120 urine analyzer can be downloaded to computer by using the relevant software.
The following communication protocol defines the format and timing for data transmission from the U120
Urine Analyzer. Data available from the analyzer includes specimen ID, date, time, and urine analysis
results. This insert provides information required to develop a suitable computer interface to transfer
analyzer data to an external computer with suitable PC (Personal computer) software or a LIS (laboratory
information system)

1) Material required
A null modem cable is required for connection to a personal computer. The pin configuration for the cable
is as follows:
RS232 Cable Pin Assignment
Analyzer Computer
2 3
3 2
5 5

2) Download to PC
2.1) connect the RS232C port on the analyzer to the COM 1 port of the computer.
2.2) Turn on the analyzer, and set up the “Autoprint” as “On”.
2.3) open the communication software in the PC, such as Hyperterminal.
Enter the following PC data interface:
# Item setup
1 Port COM1
2 Baud rate 4800/9600(default)/19200, should be the same as U120 Baud rate.
3 data bits 8
4 parity No
5 Stop Bit 1
6 Flow Control Hand-shake Off (No)
2.4) Data is sent to the analyzer communication ports when data is being printed to either the internal or
external printer.

3) Download to LIS
If the LIS system is available for users, we should provide the following information to LIS supplier.
The LIS supplier should make a minor change on software to make it compatible with U500 urine
analyzer.

3.1) Data format.

3.2) all data transmitted are ASCII characters, codes below are hexadecimal.
Each record begins with 02 (Start of text)
0D (Carriage return)
Each line of data ends with
0A (Line feed)
Each record ends with 03 (End of text)

5. Qulity control

Each lab should develop and use its own standards and procedures for performance. Adequate measuring
performance of U120 Urine analyzer can be controlled by commercial urine control solutions or
calibration strips.

It is recommended to check the analyzer periodic. Each lab should establish the period of Qulity Control
tesing, usually depends on the consumption (once a month, or per 1000 tests).

The Recommened commercial urine control is Mission Liquid urine control, Mission Dry Strip urine
control or Mission Liquid Diptube urine control.

Urine control solution testing procedures:

1) Turn on the urine analyzer, and refer to the instruction on user manual to choose the test mode as
“QC”.

2) Test the Bio-Rad Liquicheck control Level I and Level II as the package insert.

3) Compare the testing results to target value of ACON U120 Urine analyzer listed on package insert.
Repeat more testing if any difference, to avoid any operation mistake.

4) If the testing results are exactly the same as target value, the analyzer is in good performance and
suitable for use. Any difference, check the troubshooting on package insert for further solution.
