1. SCOPE
1.1 This s p e c i f i c a t i o n covers sundry items f o r s t r u c t u r a l steelwork such as p r e f a b r i -
cated ladders, catwalks, open g r i d f l o o r s , handrails, etc., t h a t a r e u s u a l l y f a b r i -
cated from commercial qual it y s t e e l .
NOTE: The standards r e f e r r e d t o i n t h e s p e c i f i c a t i o n a r e l i s t e d i n Appendix A.
2. INTERPRETATION
2.1 SUPPORTING SPECIFICATIONS. Where t h i s s p e c i f i c a t i o n i s r e q u i r e d f o r a p r o j e c t , t h e
f o l l o w i n g s p e c i f i c a t i o n s s h a l l , i n t e r a l i a , form p a r t o f t h e c o n t r a c t document
(NOTE: Item (b) may o r may n o t be bound i n t h e document):
a) P r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n ;
b) SABS 1200 AI4 o r SABS 1200 A o r SABS 1200 AA, as appropriate.
2.2 . APPLICATION. This s p e c i f i c a t i o n contains clauses t h a t a r e g e n e r a l l y a p p l i c a b l e t o
s t r u c t u r a l steelwork c o n s t r u c t i o n f o r sundry items. I n t e r p r e t a t i o n s and v a r i a t i o n s
o f the specification are set out i n Portion 2 o f the project specification
(see 2.1).
2.3 DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS. For t h e purposes o f t h i s s p e c i f i c a t i o n , t h e d e f i n i -
t i o n s and abbreviations given i n SABS 1200 AH, SABS 1200 A o r SABS 1200 AA, as
applicable, s h a l l apply.
3. MATERIALS
3.1 STRUCTURAL STEEL. ExceDt where s t e e l comalvina w i t h t h e reauirements o f SABS 1431
i s r e q u i r e d t o be used i n terms o f t h e drawings o r t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n , m i l d
s t e e l o f commercial q u a l i t y may be used i n t h e f a b r i c a t i o n o f steelwork items.
Steel sections s h a l l comply w i t h t h e requirements f o r dimensions and p r o p e r t i e s
g i v e n i n t h e South A f r i c a n I n s t i t u t e o f Steel C o n s t r u c t i o n ’ s s t r u c t u r a l s t e e l
tab1 es.
3.2 WELDING CONSUMABLES
3.2.1 Electrodes. Welding electrodes s h a l l comply w i t h t h e a p p l i c a b l e requirements o f
S A B S 4 5 5 r such o t h e r standard as may be agreed upon by t h e Engineer and t h e
Contractor.
3.2.2 S t o r a y and yandling. The storage and handling of a l l consumables s h a l l be i n
accor ance wi€h’-thG requirements o f BS 5135.
3.2.3 Q u a l i t y . Welding consumables, i n a d d i t i o n t o complying w i t h t h e r e uirements o f
3.-23, s h a l l be such t h a t they produce weld metal t h a t , when t e s t e i n accordance 1
w i t h t h e a p p l i c a b l e method g i v e n i n BS 709, has a minimum y i e l d s t r e s s and minimum
t e n s i l e s t r e n g t h a t l e a s t equal t o those o f t h e p a r e n t metal.
3.3 BOLTS, NUTS AND WASHERS
3.3.1 and nuts o t h e r than f i t t e d b o l t s
j o i n t s s h a l l comply w i t h t h e
requirements o f SABS 135, SABS 136 o r SABS 1143 (as a p p l i c a b l e ) f o r t h e t y p e shown
on t h e drawings o r scheduled. Nuts s h a l l be o f a t l e a s t t h e s t r e n g t h grade
a p p r o p r i a t e t o t h e grade o f b o l t o r o t h e r threaded element w i t h which they a r e
used.
F i t t e d b o l t s s h a l l comply w i t h t h e r e l e v a n t requirements o f SABS 136.
Washers f o r b o l t s and nuts s h a l l comply w i t h t h e r e l e v a n t requirements o f
SABS 1149.
4. PLANT
4.1 P l a n t and equipment used i n t h e handling, f a b r i c a t i o n and e r e c t i o n o f steelwork
s h a l l comply w i t h t h e requirements o f t h e Machinery and Occupational Safety Act,
1983 (Act 6 o f 1983), o r t h e Mines and Works Act, 1956 (Act 27 o f 1956), as
a p p l i c a b l e . Handling and l i f t i n g plant. s h a l l have enough c a p a c i t y t o ensure t h a t
steelwork i s placed i n i t s f i n a l p o s i t i o n w i t h o u t d i s t o r t i o n o r undue s t r e s s i n g o f
members. The use o f cranes, l i f t i n g devices, s a f e t y b e l t s , harnesses, nets and
barricades s h a l l comply w i t h t h e recommendations g i v e n i n BS 5531.

5. CONSTRUCTION
5.1 DRAWINGS AND SHOP D E T A I L S
5.1.1 Design Drawings. The Engineer's drawings w i l l i n c l u d e a general arrangement o f t h e
pi--~po-secf'J%i;iTc€ut-ei n d i c a t i n g a1 1 s t r u c t u r a l member sizes and special connections
and w i l l be s u f f i c i e n t l y comprehensive t o a l l o w t h e d e t a i l i n g o f a l l connections.
Dimension f i g u r e s on t h e drawings s h a l l be deemed t.o be c o r r e c t , even if t h e
drawings a r e n o t t o scale. No dimension s h a l l be obtained from a drawing by
scaling.
5.1.2 Shop--- D e t a i l s . The Contractor s h a l l prepare h i s own shop d e t a i l s . Immediately on
receip€--oTfhe Engineer's drawings, t h e Contractor s h a l l s a t i s f y h i m s e l f t h a t t h e
design drawings c o n t a i n a1 1 t h e information r e q u i r e d f o r -the p r e p a r a t i o n o f t h e
shop d e t a i l s . The s a i d shop d e t a i l s and o t h e r drawings s h a l l be submitted i n d u p l i -
c a t e t o t h e Engineer f o r approval a t l e a s t 1 week ( o r such o t h e r p e r i o d as may be
s t a t e d i n t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n ) b e f o r e commencement o f f a b r i c a t i o n . The
C o n t r a c t o r ' s drawings s h a l l be coinpl e t e i n every respect ( i n c l u d i n g we1 d i ng
d e t a i l s , which s h a l l be f u l l y described) and s h a l l be checked by t h e Contractor
p r i o r t o submission. One copy o f each drawing w i l l be r e t a i n e d by t h e Engineer and,
within 1 week ( o r such o t h e r p e r i o d as may be s t a t e d i n t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n )
a f t e r t h e date of r e c e i p t by t h e Engineer, t h e o t h e r copy w i l l be r e t u r n e d t o t h e
Contractor w i t h t h e Engineer's comments o r w r i t t e n approval, as t h e case may be.
Before t h e commencement o f f a b r i c a t i o n , t h e Contractor s h a l l o b t a i n from t h e
Engineer approval o f t h e shop d e t a i l s , i n w r i t i n g . The approval g i v e n by t h e
Engineer re1ates t o s t r u c t u r a l adequacy and does n o t absolve t h e Contractor from
t h e responsibi 1 i t y f o r dimensional accuracy.
5.1.3 Codes o f P r a c t i c e . Except t h a t s t r u c t u r a l s t e e l s h a l l comply w i t h 3.1, t h e design
a n d 3 h e c o n s t r u c f i o n o f a l l work s h a l l comply w i t h t h e p r o v i s i o n s o f SABS 0162 o r
SABS 0104.
5.1.4 V a r i a t i o n s from Drawin s and Sections. Except bfhere otherwise authorized i n w r i t i n g
b y t h e t n g i n e e r , t h i r a c t o r s h m ensure t h a t t h e work i s c a r r i e d o u t s t r i c t l y
i n accordance w i t h t h e drawings approved by t h e Engineer. Steel sections s h a l l be
provided as s p e c i f i e d on t h e drawings except t h a t s u b s t i t u t i o n w i 11 be pernii t t e d
w i t h t h e Engineer's p r i o r approval. Where t h e Contractor wishes t o make a s u b s t i t u -
t i o n , he s h a l l submit h i s reasons and a l t e r n a t i v e proposals i n w r i t i n g .

5.2 FABRICATION AND ASSEMBLY


5.2.1 General. A l l s t r u c t u r a l s t e e l s h a l l , b o t h b e f o r e and a f t e r f a b r i c a t i o n ,

5.2.2 Cuttin . C u t t i n g may be made by sawing, shearing, cropping o r flame-cutting.
EXjG"+hall be f r e e from any defects o r d i s t o r t i o n s and a l l b u r r s , notches, sharp
edges and s i m i l a r defects s h a l l be removed b e f o r e t h e s t e e l i s used.
5.2.3 Holes f o r Fastener:. The spacing between holes f o r fasteners and distances between
FiTiTes and edges s h a l l comply w i t h tht! r e l e v a n t p r o v i s i o n s o f SABS 0162. Holes f o r
fasteners s h a l l n o t be formed by flame-cutting. Holes s h a l l not. be punched through
members o f thickness exceeding e i t h e r 12 mm o r t h e diameter o f t h e hole, whichever
i s the lesser.
The diameter o f holes f o r fasteners s h a l l n o t exceed t h e diameter o f t h e fastener
by more than
a) 2 mm i n t h e case o f fasteners o f diameter up t o 24 mm; and
b ) 3 ntm i n t h s case o f fasteners o f diameter over 24 mm .
A l l b u r r s s h a l l be removed from holes b e f o r e assembly.
Holes f o r fasteners o r f o r p i n s s h a l l be so a l i g n e d .that t h e fasteners can be
i n s e r t e d f r e e l y through t h e assembled members i n a d i r e c t i o n a t r i g h t angles t o t h e
faces i n contact. D r i f t i n g t o a l i g n holes s h a l l be so done t h a t t h e metal i s n o t
d i s t o r t e d and t h e holes a r e not enlarged.
5.2.4 Welding. Welding s h a l l be c a r r i e d o u t i n accordance w i t h t h e r e l e v a n t p r o v i s i o n s o f
SABSF34, SAPS 0162 and A M D 1 . l o r BS 5135. P a r t i c u l a r a t t e n t i o n s h a l l be p a i d t o
the following:
a) Welding techniques s h a l l be such as t o prevent undue d i s t o r t i o n and minimize
shrinkage -tresses.
b ) A l l slag and s p a t t e r s h a l l be removed.
5.2.5 B o l t i s . The a a r t s t o be j o i n e d s h a l l be f i r m l y drawn together. Where necessal-y,
S e r s s h a l l b e tapered t o g i v e b o l t heads and nuts a f u l l bearing. Where b o l t
holes have g r e a t e r than normal clearance, washers s h a l l be used under b o l t heads and
nuts.
The l e n g t h o f each b o l t s h a l l be such t h a t a f t e r t h e b o l t has been t,ightened, a t
l e a s t one f u l l thread p r o j e c t s through t h e nut and a t l e a s t one f u l l thread ( i n
a d d i t i o n t o t h e thread runout) remains c l e a r between t h e n u t and t h e unthreaded
shank.
5.2.6 H_indraj_!s. Handrails s h a l l be o f t.he type and s h a l l be purpose made i n t h e s t y l e
and shapes g i v e n i n t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n and shown on t h e drawings. The
Contractor s h a l l ensure, by making i n - s i t u nteasurcmonts b e f o r e manufacture i s
started, that, t h e h a n d r a i l s s u i t t h e s i t u a t i o n i n which they a r e t o be i n s t a l l e d .

5.2.7 Ladders. Ladders s h a l l be manufactured i n accordance w i t h t h e d e t a i l s and general

arrangements shown on t h e drawings.


Ladders s h a l l be supplied complete w i t h a l l t h e necessary b o l t s , nuts and washers
for fixing.
5.2.8 0 en G r i d Floors
5.2.8.1 &n-CjFTd-s51 covers and f l o o r panel s s h a l l be manufactured by an approved firm
s p e c i a l i z i n g i n such work, They s h a l l be pressure locked o r welded ( o r b o t h ) . A l l
span-bars s h a l l have a thickness, depth and spacing such t h a t t h e d e f l e c t i o n of any
b a r under design l o a d c o n d i t i o n s does n o t exceed 1/200th o f t h e c l e a r span, o r
10 mm, whichever i s t h e l e s s e r .
5.2.8.2 F l o o r i n g s h a l l be made up i n panels o f sizes t h a t conform t o t h e dimensions g i v e n
on t h e drawings. The panels s h a l l be s u p p l i e d p r e f a b r i c a t e d w i t h cut-outs t h a t con-
form t o t h e d e t a i l s given. Unless authorized t o do so, t h e Contractor s h a l l n o t c u t
o r weld open g r i d f l o o r panels on S i t e .
5.2.9 F l o o r l a t e F l o o r s . F l o o r p l a t e s h a l l be as s p e c i f i e d and s h a l l have an approved
EST&-j%X"FCifting key holes s h a l l be provided as s p e c i f i e d .
5.2.10 P r o t e c t i v e Treatment. A l l s t e e l surfaces t h a t a r e t o be painted, o r otherwise

c o r r o s i o n p r e v e n t i o n system i s specified, open g r i d f l o o r i n g s h a l l be dipped i n
b l a c k bitumen.
5.3 ERECTION AND INSTALLATION
5.3.1 General. The Contractor s h a l l , b e f o r e commencing e r e c t i o n o f steelwork, submit
dG€CiTTX o f t h e method o f e r e c t i o n t o t h e Engineer f o r h i s i n f o r m a t i o n and comment.
Such comment w i l l n o t r e l i e v e t h e Contractor o f h i s s o l e r e s p o n s i b i l i t y f o r t h e
s a f e t y and adequacy o f t h e e r e c t i o n methods used.
A l l items s h a l l be so stored, transported, handled and erected t h a t they a r e n o t
subject t o undue s t r e s s o r damage.
5.3.2 fs.Ka{,-...D
S a f e t du- Erectlo!. During erection, items s h a l l be so f i x e d and so secured as
ovi'fi-6E-for a1 1 e r e c t i o n loads and c o n d i t i o n s .
5.3.3 Before t h e Contractor commences e r e c t i o n o f steelwork on S i t e , he
t h a t t h e s e t t i n g - o u t and t h e l e v e l s o f holding-down b o l t s and o f
concrete foundations, beam faces, columns, e t c . a r e i n accordance w i t h t h e
drawings p r o v i d e d and he s h a l l r e p o r t any discrepancies t o t h e Engineer imme-
d i ate1y.

6. TOLERANCES
6.1 FABRICATION AND ASSEMBLY TOLERANCE
6.1.1 General
6.1.1.1 Exceptwhere otherwise r e q u i r e d i n terms o f 6.1.2 and 6.1.3, t h e f a b r c a t i o n and
assembly t o l e r a n c e on a l l dimensions s h a l l be f 2 mm .
6.1.1.2 Holes f o r connections s h a l l be a l i q n e d as s p e c i f i e d i n 5.2.3.

7. TESTING
7.1 TEST CERTIFICATES. Where r e q u i r e d i n terms o f t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n , t e s t cer-
t i f i c a t e s o r c a s t a n a l y s i s c e r t i f i c a t e s ( o r both), p e r t a i n i n g t o t h e s t e e l t o be
used, s h a l l be s u p p l i e d t o t h e Engineer by t h e Contractor.
7.2 INSPECTION. The Engineer s h a l l have access a t a l l reasonable times t o a l l places
where t h e work i s being c a r r i e d o u t and s h a l l be provided with a1 1 t h e necessary
f a c i l i t i e s f o r i n s p e c t i o n d u r i n g a1 1 stages o f c o n s t r u c t i o n o r manufacture.
7.3 INSPECTION AND TESTING OF WELDS. The Contractor s h a l l examine welds as f o l l o w s :
a) Visual examination o f a l l welds t o check t h a t t h e r e a r e no uneven l e g lengths
and t h a t t h e r e i s no cracking o r unacceptable u n d e r c u t t i n g o r p o r o s i t y , as recom-
mended i n SABS 044: P a r t 111; and
b) dimensional checks i n accordance w i t h BS 5135.
8. MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
8.1 BASIC PRINCIPLES
8.1.1 Work i n v o l v i n g s t e e l members w i l l be measured by mass o f s t e e l . Sundry items w i l l
b e measured by number, mass o r area, depending on t h e nature o f t h e i t e m
(see 8.1.2).
8.1.2 Where t h e r e i s considerable r e p e t i t i o n o f a r t i c l e s o f t h e same d e s c r i p t i o n and mass
(e.g. s t a i r s , foundation b o l t s , small frames, loose c l e a t s , e t c . ) t h a t a r e measured
by mass, t h e number o f such a r t i c l e s and t h e mass o r length, as applicable, o f each
w i l l be s t a t e d i n t h e schedule.
8.2 COMPUTATION OF QUANTITIES
8.2.1 The mass o f steelwork w i l l be c a l c u l a t e d on t h e b a s i s o f t h e nominal mass p e r u n i t
l e n g t h as s t a t e d i n t h e South A f r i c a n I n s t i t u t e of Steel C o n s t r u c t i o n ' s s t r u c t u r a l
s t e e l t a b l e s o r i n t h e manufacturer's handbook or, w h y e n o t so stated, t h e mass
w i l l be c a l c u l a t e d from a s t e e l d e n s i t y o f 7 850 kg/m . The mass o f f i t t i n g s such
as c l e a t s , gussets, b a t t e n s and s t i f f e n e r s w i l l be added t o t h e mass o f t h e mem-
bers.
8.2.2 Tolerances f o r r o l l i n g margins and o t h e r p e r m i s s i b l e d e v i a t i o n s w i l l be neglected.
No deductions w i l l be made f o r holes f o r fasteners o r f o r m i l l i n g o r planing, and
no a d d i t i o n s w i l l be made f o r r o l l i n g margin, waste, weld metal o r galvanizing.
8.2.3 Unless otherwise stated, gussets w i l l be measured on t h e b a s i s o f t h e minimum
encl 0s ing rectang 1 e .
