**JOY (CONT'D)**

Sadness! Did you touch a memory? We talked about this.

**SADNESS**
Oh yes, I know. I'm sorry.

**JOY**
Get back in your circle.
(trying to eject the memory)
Gnnh! What's happening? Why won't it eject?!

She fiddles with the console, but the blue memory won’t move.

**FEAR**
Get it out of there, Joy!

**IN THE CLASSROOM**

**Riley**
(sobbing)
We used to play tag and stuff...

**IN HEADQUARTERS**
**DISGUST**
Cool kids whispering at 3 o'clock!

**IN THE CLASSROOM**

The other kids whisper and stare.

**IN HEADQUARTERS**
**FEAR**
Did you see that look? They're judging us!

**JOY**
Oh no.

Joy tries to pull the memory. Anger, Fear, and Disgust help.

**JOY (CONT'D)**
Someone help me. Grab that... everyone...

They pull with all their might, but the memory doesn't budge.

**IN THE CLASSROOM**

**Riley**
But everything's different now. Since we moved...

Tears run down Riley’s face.

**IN HEADQUARTERS**
**FEAR**
Oh no! We're crying at school!

Joy turns to the console. Sadness is in control.

**JOY**
What? No! Sadness, what are you doing?

Joy finally pulls the memory out. She rushes to the console and pulls Sadness away
from the controls.

**SADNESS**
Oh no, I’m sorry... I... oh...

A memory is created. BRIGHT BLUE.

**JOY**
Huh?

**ANGER**
Whoa!

**FEAR**
It's a core memory!

**DISGUST**
But it's blue!

The bright blue core memory rolls towards the core memory holder.

**JOY**
No, wait... stop! No! Ahh!

Joy leaps to the holder and opens it, preventing the new blue core memory from
entering. She grabs it.

She presses the "memory flush" button. The tube descends from the ceiling.

**SADNESS**
(trying to take the memory back from Joy)
Joy, no. That's a core memory, Joy!

**JOY**
Hey! Stop. Let go.

As they struggle, they bump into the Core Memory Holder, knocking all the core
memories to the ground.

**FEAR/DISGUST/ANGER**
Ahh!

**FEAR**
The core memories!

Through the window, the PERSONALITY ISLANDS DIM.

**IN THE CLASSROOM**

Riley, with tear-streaked face, looks up.

**IN HEADQUARTERS**
**JOY**
Ahh!

Joy throws the blue core memory aside to pick up the yellow core memories.
Sadness grabs the blue core memory and heads to the Core Memory Holder to plug
it in. Joy lunges, knocking the blue core memory out of Sadness’s hands. It gets
sucked into the vacuum tube.

Joy is pulled backward. In the chaos, a yellow memory is sucked toward the tube.

**JOY (CONT'D)**
No no no no!

She reaches to grab it and is sucked into the tube herself, along with the other core
memories, and Sadness!

Fear, Anger, and Disgust are now alone in headquarters. A stunned silence as the
tube retracts.

**IN THE CLASSROOM**

Riley sits and wipes away her tears.

**TEACHER**
Thank you, Riley. I know it can be hard moving to a new place, but we're glad to
have you here. Alright everyone, take out your history books and turn to chapter
seven.

Riley hides behind her book.

**IN HEADQUARTERS**
**ANGER**
Can I say that curse word now?

**IN THE TUBE**

Joy and Sadness scream as they travel down the tube. Joy desperately tries to hold
onto the core memories. The blue core memory is sorted into a side tube.

**EXT. EDGE OF LONG-TERM MEMORY**

Joy lands in a memory bin. Sadness crashes beside her.

**JOY**
Oh no...
(picking up memories)
One, two, three... okay, I've got them. What—where are we?

Joy takes in the shelves around her.

**JOY (CONT'D)**
Long-term memory...!

Joy takes the core memories and jumps out of the bin. She sees GOOFBALL
ISLAND, quiet and dark.

**JOY (CONT'D)**
Goofball Island.

Joy looks at the islands beyond. They are all dark.

**SADNESS**
Hoh... Riley's personality islands. They’re all down! This is bad.

**JOY**
We... can fix this. We just need to get back to headquarters, plug in the core
memories and Riley will be back to normal.

Joy and Sadness rush towards headquarters.

**SADNESS**
Riley has no core memories, no personality islands and no—

(gasps)

**JOY**
What is it?

**SADNESS**
You! You’re not in headquarters. Without you, Riley can’t be happy. We need to get
you back there.

**JOY**
I’m coming, Riley.

They cross the bridge to Goofball Island. We see the LIGHTLINE beyond, leading to
headquarters.

**AT THE DINNER TABLE - EVENING**

Riley and her parents are having dinner.

**MOM**
So it turns out the green bin is not for recycling, it’s for compost. Like vegetable
scraps and egg shells.

**DAD**
(not really listening)
Mmm.

**MOM**
And the blue one is for recycling. And the black one is for trash.

Riley pushes food around on her plate.

**IN HEADQUARTERS**
**DISGUST**
Riley's acting so weird. Why is she acting so weird?

**ANGER**
What do you expect? All the islands are down.

**DISGUST**
Joy would know what to do.
**FEAR**
That's it! Until she gets back, we just do what Joy would do!

**DISGUST**
Great idea! Anger, Fear, Disgust. How are we supposed to be happy?

**MOM (OS)**
Hey Riley, I have good news!

**AT THE DINNER TABLE - CONTINUOUS**

**MOM**
I found a junior hockey league right here in San Francisco. And get this: tryouts are
tomorrow after school. How lucky is that?

**IN HEADQUARTERS**
**ANGER**
Hockey?

**DISGUST**
Uh oh. What do we do?

**FEAR**
Guys, uh, this... Here, pretend to be Joy.

Fear pushes Disgust forward. She approaches to take control.

**ON THE SCREEN:**

**MOM**
Wouldn't it be great to be back out on the ice?

**AT THE DINNER TABLE**

**Riley**
(sarcastic)
Oh yeah, that sounds fantastic.

**IN HEADQUARTERS**
**FEAR**
What was that? That was nothing like Joy.

**DISGUST**
Uh, because I’m NOT Joy.

**FEAR**
Yeah, no kidding.
**AT THE DINNER TABLE**
Mom, puzzled, looks at Riley. Zoom into Mom’s head...

**IN MOM’S HEADQUARTERS**

Mom's Sadness
Did you guys catch that?

Mom's Anger
Uh huh.

Mom's Joy / Mom's Fear / Mom's Disgust

Oh yeah / Definitely.

Mom's Disgust
Something's wrong.

Mom's Anger
Should we ask her?

Mom's Sadness
Let’s probe, but keep it subtle so she doesn’t notice.

**AT THE DINNER TABLE**

**MOM**
So! How was the first day of school?

**IN RILEY’S HEADQUARTERS**

**ANGER**
She’s probing us.

**DISGUST**
I’m done.
(to Fear)
YOU pretend to be Joy.

**FEAR**
What? Uh... okay... hmm.

**AT THE DINNER TABLE**

**Riley**
(nervous)
It was fine, I guess. I don’t know.
**IN RILEY’S HEADQUARTERS**
**DISGUST**
Oh, very smooth, that was JUST like Joy.

**IN MOM’S HEADQUARTERS**

Mom's Anger
Something is definitely going on.

Mom's Disgust
She’s never acted like this before. What should we do?

Mom's Sadness
Let’s find out what’s happening. But we’ll need support.

Point to Dad.

**AT THE DINNER TABLE**

Mom clears her throat at Dad. He doesn’t notice. Zoom into Dad’s head...

**IN DAD’S HEADQUARTERS**

All of Dad's emotions are watching a HOCKEY GAME, cheering.

**SPORTS ANNOUNCER**
...with a nice pass to Reeves, he meets at center ice...

**AT THE DINNER TABLE**

Mom looks at him again and clears her throat. Dad looks up, clueless.

**IN DAD’S HEADQUARTERS**

Dad's Anger
Uh oh. She’s looking at us.
(turns off the memory)
What did she say?

Dad's Fear
What? Uh, sorry sir. No one was listening.

Dad's Anger
Is it garbage night? Did we leave the toilet seat up? What? What is it, woman,
WHAT?!

**IN MOM’S HEADQUARTERS**

Mom's Disgust
(re: Dad on screen)
He’s making that stupid face again.

Mom's Anger
I could strangle him right now!

Mom's Sadness
Signal him again.

**AT THE DINNER TABLE**

Mom raises her eyebrows and tilts her head towards Riley. Dad finally gets it.

**DAD**
Ahh, so, Riley! How was school?

**IN MOM’S HEADQUARTERS**

Mom's emotions give up.

Mom's Joy / Mom's Sadness
