REVIEW
Research
Process & Types
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, I can:
• define the research process and identify different types of
research methods;
• differentiate between qualitative and quantitative
research methods based on their characteristics and
purposes; and
• demonstrate an appreciation for the applicability and
significance of various research methods in different
contexts
Scientific Method
of Investigation
Scientific Method of Investigation
• P (Problem) – stating a
problem/identifying a problem
• D (Data) – gathering of data
• H (Hypothesis) – formulating hypothesis
• E (Experiment) – testing the hypothesis
• C (Conclusion) – accept or reject the
hypothesis
Types of Research
Qualitative Research
It involves collecting non-numerical data to
explore attitudes, behaviors, and experiences. In
this case, researchers might conduct in-depth
interviews or analyze open-ended survey
responses to gain insights into the challenges
and benefits students faced with online learning.
Qualitative Research

Example: Understanding
students' experiences
with online learning
during the pandemic.
Quantitative Research
It involves collecting numerical data to establish
patterns, correlations, and statistical
relationships. Researchers could gather data on
the number of hours students studied and their
corresponding exam scores to analyze the
strength of the relationship between the two
variables.
Quantitative Research

Example: Examining the

relationship between
study hours and exam
scores.
Historical Research
It involves analyzing past events, documents,
and records to uncover patterns, causes, and
impacts. Researchers might delve into primary
sources like letters, diaries, and newspapers to
understand the social, political, and economic
factors that contributed to the Civil War.
Historical Research

Example: Investigating
the causes and
consequences of the
People Power
Revolution.
Experimental Research
Researchers manipulate variables to observe
their impact on outcomes. A student might
conduct an experiment where they plant the
same type of seeds in different soil types and
measure factors like plant height, number of
leaves, and overall health to determine which soil
type promotes the best plant growth.
Experimental Research

Example: Investigating
the effect of different
soil types on plant
growth.
