Timgad, known as Thamugadi, is a famous huge site in Algeria.
It is an ancient Roman military city located in the Ares Mountains,
Batna in Northeastern Algeria. The city was founded by Emperor
Trajan around 100AD. It was built to control one of the main roads through Aures
Mountains to the Sahara desert.
It was believed that Timgad reached a population of over 15.000 inhabitants. They all lived
comfortably in a classic Roman lifestyle. As Timgad is one of the best preserved Roman
ruins in Algeria, it was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Thamugadi still
an amazing place to be visited by tourists.
