QUESTION 4

(a) The price of a new BMW X5 is R1 207 900. The value of the car depreciates
at a rate of 12% per annum according to the reducing balance method.
Calculate the value of the car after 5 years. (3)

(b) Donald Duck’s nephew, Huey, wants to go on a world cruise in 5 years’ time. He will
need R175 000 for the cruise.

(1) How much must he invest now if the interest rate he receives is 6,8% per
annum, compounded quarterly? (3)

(2) Calculate the effective interest rate per annum on his investment, correct to
two decimal places. (3)

(c) Huey’s brothers, Louie and Dewey, also want to go on the cruise, and they will need
R350 000 in total for their trips. To help them, Uncle Donald makes a payment of
R155 000 immediately into another holiday fund. Three years later, another R140 000
is deposited into the fund. Six months prior to departure a withdrawal of
R15 000 is made. The interest rate is 6% per annum, compounded quarterly, for the
first two years. Thereafter it changes to 7,4%, compounded monthly, for the last three
years. Show all your calculations to determine if there will be enough money at the
end of the five years to pay for their trips. (6)
