Standard Operating Procedure
Title : Standard Operating Procedure for in house and On site Calibration of Level measurement devices

SOP No. : SOP/EH/Cal/Level

1.0 Purpose

Standard Operating Procedure for the calibration of level measuring devices (In-House and On-site) and
for generating the calibration certificate.

2.0 Scope
Calibration of Level measuring device such as Contact and Non contact type Level measuring Radars.

3.0 Warning and Cautions

▪ Both the operator and the person responsible for the process should be informed that a Service
job will be carried out
▪ A permit to work should be obtained before commencement of any service activities.
▪ If applicable, before disconnecting any sensor that is attached to the process, determine what
chemical or liquid is being measured (observe safety data sheet).
▪ Be aware of the temperature and pressure conditions.
▪ Never open a process fitting or loosen flange bolts before you have confirmed it is safe to do so.
▪ Be sure not to disturb the process when disconnecting inputs/outputs or when simulating
signals.
▪ Be aware of the local safety instructions and always work according to Endress + Hauser
Standard Operating Procedure of Health and Safety
▪ Use required Personal Protective Equipment. (Googles, Helmet, Hand gloves, Safety shoes,
Mask, Apron etc. where ever applicable)
▪ Ensure our tools, equipments and the customer process are protected from cross contamination.
Consider and plan necessary cleaning steps.
▪ When service requiring chemicals (e.g. as reagents for standard operation or for cleaning
purposes), always follow and observe the safety regulations stated in the safety data sheet

4.0 Environment Condition

Measure and note down ambient temperature and Humidity at the point of calibration.

Permanent Laboratory Calibration On Site Calibration

Air Temperature at Location 25 ± 3 °C Air Temperature at Location 35 ± 15 °C
Humidity at Location 60 ± 15 % RH Humidity at Location 50 ± 30 % RH

5.0 Calibration Equipment

▪ Master Level Measurement tool ( e.g.: Measuring Tape, Master Level Radar etc.)
▪ Mounting assembly and reflector.
▪ Level Rig and its process connections (As applicable)
▪ Multimeter and Signal source generator (wherever necessary)

The measuring equipment used to validate results must be calibrated at specified intervals against
measurement standards traceable to national or international measurement standards. The reference
device should be calibrated within the interval defined.

If during the calibration procedure three consecutive UUT non-conformance failures occur, Doubt is raised
as to the operation and accuracy of the reference instrument.

If there is any doubt of the correct functionality, the reference instrument must be marked ‘Defective’ and
sent immediately for recalibration. An ‘as found’-calibration of the reference instrument must be
performed in all cases before any eventual adjustment/repair is executed.

6.0 Calibration Procedure

Dry Calibration :

Preparation
Before starting a calibration, perform a visual inspection of the measuring instrument to assure that the
instruments are not damaged or require repair. If there is any doubt, it is advisable to perform a function
test of the instrument.

Check the device configuration. Important points are:

▪ Empty distance
▪ Span (full distance)
▪ Distance unit
▪ Blocking distance

Enter the measuring range, display range, calibration points (according to customer specification) and
instrument data in the test report.

Ensure a stable power supply voltage (according to the instrument specification) of the Unit under Test
(UUT).

Remove the Unit Under Test (UUT) from the process vessel. If this is not possible, consider a wet
calibration. Use an appropriate mounting bracket to install the UUT.

Calibration
Apply the agreed upon calibration test points and note the respective values (display value ifapplicable,
and signal output value) of the Unit Under Test (UUT) and the reference instrument. When each
calibration point is reached, ensure that the test value is stable for at least 30 seconds or 5 times the set
damping value of the evaluation electronics of the Unit Under Test (UUT). Finally, record all values in the
calibration certificate

Ultrasonic /Radar type Level Instrument

Using the mounting Bracket, Target the UUT at a straight reflector/surface. The device can be mounted
horizontal or vertical. Wait until the reading is stable and take a note of the measuring distance (X). The
measure level must be calculated:

Level = Empty Distance – Measured Distance

In Order to finish calibration, the position of the mounting bracket(including the UUT) must be changed,
different reading must be taken and compared with an appropriate reference (three point recommended).

Use a calibrated measuring tape or similar range finder/Laser meter as your reference

Reference point

Remark:
Usually the reference point is the sensor membrane of the device. Be aware that some device/principles
could use a different reference point.

Guided Radar

The Calibration of Rope Version is limited.

Ensure that in this Mounting position the reading is stable.Mount the clamp reflector (ideally Metallic)
and wait for thesignal to respond. Wait till the reading is stable and take a note of the measured distance
(X). The measure level must be calculated

Level = Empty Distance – Measured Distance

In Order to finish calibration, the position of the clamp-on reflector must be changed, different reading
must be taken and compared with an appropriate reference (three points recommended).

Use a calibrated measuring tape or similar range finder/Laser meter as your reference.

Remark:
Usually the reference point is the process connection (Flange or threaded connection) of the device. Be
aware that some device/principles could use a different reference point

7.0 Reference Documents

▪ Service Order(s) for the job

▪ Calibration Specification List
▪ Endress+Hauser Standard 310
▪ Operating Manuals of relevant calibration tools and equipment and UUTs
▪ Calibration certificates of reference calibration tools
▪ All relevant previous Service Reports, Calibration Certificates and Non-Conformity Reports of UUTs
▪ Customer specific documents, If any

8.0 Interval

The calibration interval depends on the application, the function of the instruments in the process as
well as the user requirements and the manufacturer’s specifications. The calibration intervals are
determined by customer. Endress+Hauser may provide consulting on calibration intervals or calibration
management services on request.

No recalibration date is to be included on the Calibration Certificate or label unless agreed upon by the
customer.

9.0 Non – Conformity Report / Adjustment

Any non-conformity of the failure of the UUT found during calibration must be reported on the
calibration certificate or and appropriate Non – Conformity report. The notice of the non-conformity
should be confirmed by the customer’s signature. Additional actions must be coordinated with the user
and documented in the report. If the calibration values are found to be out of calibration tolerance, the
measuring instruments must be repaired or exchanged.

Because of the technology of the pressure measurement, an adjustment is not allowed without
clarifying cause of the deviation. The cause of the deviation must be resolved and if repair is necessary
must be done before an adjustment is carried out.

Should adjustment be necessary the specific procedure from the manufacture’s operating and
maintenance manual should be followed. Once adjustment is completed then the calibration procedure
should be carried out again and the results should be recorded on the calibration certificate with the
comment ‘as left’. This should be filed alongside the original “as found” results.

10.0 Handover

▪ Do not perform adjustment or repair of device to resolve non-conformity until this is agreed
with the customer.
▪ Should adjustment be necessary and possible with the device the specific procedure from the
manufacturer’s operating and maintenance manual should be followed.
▪ Prior to returning the instrument to customer, any internal settings that have been changed to
enable calibration must be re-installed to their original values.
▪ Once the Unit Under Test (UUT) has been re-commissioned, the unit should be observed to
ensure it is functioning correctly.
▪ Perfom cleaning of equipment before further use, if necessary.
▪ Calibration Certificates have to be passed to Customer either as signed printouts or as files with
electronic signature. A copy of every Calibration Certificate file should remain at
Endress+Hauser storage. Wherever established, Calibration Certificates should be stored in
Calibration and Maintenance Management System and/or Plant Assets Management System
linked to a UUT record.
