ABSTRACT

Population growth and rapid urbanization are combined to create enormous challenges for
Indian cities. According to McKinsey, the country`s cities will grow from 340 million people
in 2008 to 590 million in 2030. Meeting the demand for urban services in these cities will
necessitate US$ 1.1 trillion in capital investment over the next 20 years. Without proper
design and planning, massive urban growth could exacerbate existing issues such as
congestion, pollution, and traffic safety. Traffic congestion, air pollution, rising greenhouse
gas emissions, and poor public health have all been exacerbated by sprawling cities and
reliance on automobiles. To ensure that India`s future cities are both liveable and
sustainable, policymakers must find ways to reduce commuting distances and urbanites`
reliance on automobiles. Safety and accessibility are critical components in making cities
safe and sustainable places to live. As more people move to India`s cities, they will require
safe places to live, work, and commute. Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles
(UAVs), are among the most beneficial and emerging technologies, with a wide range of
applications that can help smart cities address sustainability concerns while also improving
citizens' quality of life. This systematic review sought to investigate the use of surveillance
drones in smart cities in terms of application status, application areas, proposed models,
and drone characteristics. Several cities around the world are experiencing population
growth. On that note, statistics from the United Nations provided that the world's urban
population has risen to 4.2 billion people In 2018, 751 million people made up 55% of the
world's population in 1950. Furthermore, the United Nations anticipates that the world's
urban population is expected to grow by 68% by mid-century and that 43 megacities will
exist by 2030, with at least 10 million people This population's rapid growth. The rise in
megacities is putting pressure on city planners and municipalities. To create strategic, long-
term solutions to meet the increasing citizen demands (for example, infrastructure)
enhancement and expansion, provision of adequate services creation of new jobs, and so
on). The Smart Cities paradigm emerges as a response to the goal of creating the city of the
future, where citizens' well-being and rights are guaranteed, and industry, and urban
planning is evaluated from an environmental and sustainable standpoint. Smart Cities face
some implementation challenges, but more Smart Cities research projects are being funded
and implemented. Furthermore, cities all over the world are implementing Smart City
features to improve services or citizens' quality of life. Information and communication
technology (ICT) can have an impact on the progress toward smart city environments, which
revolve around improving city services, sustainability, and citizen quality of life. Software
platforms aid in the development and consolidation of IoT-based smart city applications.
However, these platforms face several environmental, social, and technological challenges
that the ICT community must overcome. Because of these challenges, a variety of scenarios
for IoT-enabled smart cities in various situations have been considered. This chapter sheds
light on the major issues with the smart city project and the solutions implemented to
address these challenges. . In addition, in this chapter, work is proposed that demonstrates
the use of drones in city surveillance, resulting in a safer smart city. Drones, once associated
with destruction, have emerged from their limited military roles to open up a new world of
possibilities for improving the human existential experience. Drones have found their way
into virtually every field, including smart cities, thanks to their incredible breadth of
application. They are involved in a wide range of applications and functions at various stages
of smart city development and maintenance. A smart city provides dependable e-services, a
higher standard of living, and meets the needs of its residents daily. This is part of India's
ambitious "Digital India 2030" plan to develop smart cities across the country, with the
Internet of Things (IoT), modern networks, smart solutions, and ICT in the event of natural
disasters all playing a role. Residents of smart cities generate massive amounts of data as a
result of their daily behavior, which, if collected and processed, could help smart cities
become more effective, people-friendly, clean, and stable.
Organization of the work will be as follows, Chapter 1 gives the introduction, existing work
will be discussed in chapter 2, chapter 3 deals with different applications of Surveillance
drones in smart cities, and chapter 4 elaborates on the methodologies, enabling
techniques, and advantages, chapter 5 deals with the issues and challenges, chapter 6 gives
the conclusion.
