Mind the gap: Generation

(Project based on survey)

“Every generation needs a new revelation.”

- Thomas Jefferson

Name: Melissa Priju

Class: XII-C
Roll No: G11321
Acknowledgments

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my teacher,

Mrs. Azma Tanzeel, along with my principal, Mr. Neeraj
Bhargava, for providing their guidance throughout this
project. This project has granted me the opportunity to
conduct extensive research on the topic and acquire a wealth
of new information and facts.

I would also like to extend my thanks to my parents and

friends who provided invaluable assistance in finalizing this
project within the given time frame and for actively
participating in the survey.
Objectives of the project
The Key Objectives of this study are as follows:
➼ To collaborate with peers to exchange knowledge, strengthening
our combined insight of the effects of generation gap.
➼To develop an understanding and conclude whether generation
gap brings positive changes or not.
➼To explore the topic in detail by comparing research and results of
conducted surveys.

Goals
➼ To highlight the importance of understanding generation gaps.
➼ To reach a conclusion about the impact of generation gap on
relationships.

Driving Question
Do generation gaps make an impact on relationships, and if so, what
kind of an impact does it make?

Action Plan
An online survey was conducted through Google forms
to collect data about the kind of impact generation
gaps make in our daily life. Individuals actively
participated in the survey to provide as much
information as possible. Various articles, videos and
statistics were gathered and reviewed to fully
understand the topic. The information collected has
been compiled to accurately deliver and explain the
content and results of the survey.

Project Report
The term "generation gap" refers to the differences in opinions,
values, attitudes, and behaviors between different generations.
These gaps are most often noticeable between older and younger
generations, particularly between parents and their children. In
modern society, with rapid technological, social, and cultural
changes, the generation gap has become more pronounced.

There are five generations till date. These are: Baby Boomers (1946
to 1964), Generation X (1965 to 1980), Millennial Generation (1981
to 1996) and Generation Z (1997 to 2012).

There are many causes for generation gaps, such as, technological
advancements, cultural shifts, communication styles, workplace
expectations and more. This gap can make a major impact on
people’s lives and relationships, whether it is positive or negative.
And like all gaps, it must be bridged.

In the survey conducted, 25 people from different generations came

forward to share their views and opinions about this generation gap
that exists in today’s world. Majority of the participants were
Generation Z, followed by an equal number of Millennials and
Generation X. And finally, a single Baby Boomer. Regardless of their
generations, most of the participants were female.

One thing that was common in all four of the generations was that
almost all of them preferred face to face communication over digital
interaction. However, it can be observed majority of the Gen Z stated
that they use social media multiple times a day, while the other
generations either use it a few times a week or very rarely.

Most Gen Z were comfortable using new technology while the older
generations found it difficult to adapt to the new changes. In the
next question, we can see that Millenials and Gen X prioritize their
work life, followed by social life and family. Whereas, Gen Z’s
priorities rotate between education, social life and family.

A common factor between all generations is that they collectively

believe that older generations have stronger ethics than the younger
ones. Another common factor is that majority of the participants
believe that there is a generation gap in their family. The solutions
these families preferred for bridging their generation gap was
mostly found to be compromise and open discussion.

In the next question, each generation was asked what they think the
other ones are more efficient in than themselves. Older generations
believed that the younger ones were more skilled in communication,
handling new technology, adapting to changes and thinking
creatively while being street smart.

Younger generations believed older ones were better at keeping

relationships, being disciplined, have a clearer idea of the future,
good management skills, independent, aren’t addicted to devices,
handling conflicts and such.

The responses for differences between the generations ranged from

maturity level, inability to let go of the past, different mindsets to
lack of respect and understanding. The responders believed the gap
could be bridged by communication, patience, having an open mind,
understanding each other, sharing experiences and more.

From this data, we can understand that generation gap is an issue

that lingers in every family. Each generation has a contrasting view
or mindset about it. There are traits that they believe other
generations are better in, while there are also some areas where
they believe they themselves are more capable.

However, everyone seems to agree that older generations have

relatively stronger ethics. This can be observed in our day to day
lives and interactions. All of us have different priorities and
interests, but we still co-exist together. But it cannot be denied that
this co-existence also comes together with conflict.

To solve this, communication is the key. Avoiding the issue only

brings more trouble into the mix. Having patience and an open mind
is also incredibly important. Only together, it is possible to bridge
this generational gap that has formed.
Student Reflection

I have conducted a study on the impact of generation gap.

It’s effects on people of various ages, the interaction between
the generations and opinions on this matter are among the
subtopics that have been assessed in this project.

25 participants took part in an online survey that was

conducted with the aim of collecting information about the
effects of generation gap. The various opinions allowed me
to consider the thoughts of each participant. Through this
research and survey, I have gained a better and more
thorough understanding of the impact of generation gaps.
