Tutorial 1 – Rectilinear Kinematics, Projectile Motion
Question 1: The acceleration of a rocket travelling upward is given by a= 30 m/s2.
Determine the rocket’s velocity when s=2 km and the time needed to reach this
altitude. Initially, v=0 and s=0 when t=0. Recalculate the corresponding velocity
when a= (6+0.02s) m/s2, where s is in meters.
Ans: (1) v=346.4 m/s; t=11.55 s
(2) v=322.5 m/s
Question 2: A car starting from rest moves along a straight track with an acceleration
as shown. Determine the time t for the car to reach a speed of 50 m/s and construct the
v-t graph that describes the motion until the time t.
Ans: t=11.25s.

Question 3: A golf ball is struck with a velocity of 24 m/s as shown. Determine the
distance d to where it will land. Ans: d = 49.11 m
Question 4: Small packages travelling on the conveyor belt fall off into a 1-m-long
loading car. If the conveyor is running at a constant speed of vc = 2 m/s, determine the
smallest and largest distance R at which the end A of the car may be placed from the
conveyor so that the packages enter the car. Ans: R = 1.189 m, R = 0.189 m

Extra Questions:
Question P1:
A particle starts from rest at x = -2 m and moves along the x-axis with the
velocity history shown. Plot the corresponding acceleration and the displacement
histories for the 2 seconds. Find the time t when the particle crosses the origin.
Ans: t = 1.75 s

Question P2:
A young girl wants to throw a ball onto a level roof 4.6 m above the ground. If the
ball leaves her hand 1.2 m above the ground at an angle of 80°, and the roof is 3.05 m
wide, determine (a) the minimum initial velocity required for the ball to land on the
roof and (b) the maximum velocity necessary so that the ball does not go over the
roof.
Ans: (a) vmin= 8.83 m/s; (b) vmax=12.63 m/s
