10 STRATEGIES IN WRITING EXPANDED DEFINITIONS
*ETYMOLOGY
-is the scientific study of the origin and evolution of a word's semantic meaning across
time, including its constituent morphemes and phonemes
Example:
the word heat comes from the Middle English word hete, which in turn came from the
German word hitze, meaning hot.
*HISTORY
- the branch of knowledge dealing with past events. a continuous, systematic narrative of
past events as relating to a particular people, country, period, person, etc., usually written
as a chronological account; chronicle: a history of France; a medical history of the
patient.
Example:
-an umbrella term comprising past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection,
organization, presentation, and interpretation of these events. Historians seek knowledge
of the past using historical sources such as written documents, oral accounts, art and
material artifacts, and ecological markers.
* CAUSE AND EFFECT
- Cause and effect is the relationship between two events or situations, where one of the
two is the cause of the other.
Example:
The cause is the initiating event or situation, and the effect is the result of the cause. The

*DESCRIPTION

*ANALOGY
- explaining by comparing two dissimilar topics, where the second is familiar to the
audience.
Example: opposed to deduction, induction, and abduction.
*CONTRAST/NEGATION
- showing how the topic differs from others in the same class.
Examples of Negation:
• Rick is not here.
• Peter has no books.
• Sam has never been there.
• John did nothing for this project.
• Neither I nor you attended the program.
• None of us liked the movie.
• Pam has rarely cooked any food.
• Richard is buying unnecessary things.
*COMPARISON
- showing how the topic is similar to others in the class.
Example:
• My house is bigger than yours.
• Your grade is worse than mine.
• The Pacific Ocean is deeper than the Arctic Ocean.
• You are more polite than Joey.
• My brother is taller than I am, but he is older too.
• A rose is more beautiful than a daisy.
*CLASSIFICATION
- The act or method of distributing into a class or category according to characteristics.
Example:
A vehicle can be classified into land vehicles, water vehicles and air vehicles.
*ILLUSTRATION
-An illustration is a decoration, interpretation, or visual explanation of a text, concept, or
process, designed for integration in print and digitally published media.
Example:
posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations, video games and films.
