How to service 1.3

How to service

Strategy
The product is to be serviced in the customer’s home.

The repair involves replacement of the module(s). Some of the replaced modules
must be returned for repair at the Bang & Olufsen Module Repair department.
Error codes as well as an adequate fault description must be returned with each
replaced part. For this purpose, use the Module Repair form or the form in the
Retail System under Exchange Module.

To help the Bang & Olufsen Module Repair department it is very important to
answer the following questions:

1. Which products are in the setup?

2. Which software versions are used in these products?
3. How are the products linked together?
4. What happens in the actual situation?

Fault explanation and demonstration

Before troubleshooting is initiated, let the customer demonstrate the fault, if
possible.

Preparations before service

Before meeting the customer, always remember to:
- Download the latest version of the Service Manual from BeoWise.
- Use an updated version of ServiceTool MKII.

Servicing
The product must be serviced by qualified technical personnel only.
If it is not possible to determine the location of the fault or if replacing spare parts
does not clear the fault, please contact your national Service Center for technical
support.

Handling
Like any other electronic equipment, this product must be handled with care.
Particularly the mainboard inside the product, must be handled carefully.

Generally, there are three main items which require great attention, when
handling the product:

- Static electricity when the product is disassembled (ESD).

- Cleaning.
- Transport and handling.

Replacement of modules
If it is necessary to replace PCB10, Mainboard in the product, the new module
requires an adjustment after replacement. The serial number has to be transferred
into the new module, which is done by using ServiceTool MKII.

Please refer to adjustments for further information.

1.4 How to service

4.2 ServiceTool

ServiceTool

Information
The ServiceTool for BeoSound 5 Encore is ServiceTool MKII which provides the
opportunity to:

- Backup/restore product data (such as serial number, type number, etc.) from an old
module to a new PCB10, Mainboard.
- Backup/restore customer’s pincode data from an old module to a new PCB10,
Mainboard.
- Upgrade PCB10, Mainboard with new software.
- Swap between the recently installed software and the original (factory) software.
- Browse in the error log register.
- Use the Network Link test functions.

To offer the best possible service, it is necessary that the ServiceTool is updated to
the latest version before you use it. In most cases it is possible to update the
ServiceTool on site, but it is higly recommended that it is done in advance.

Connection to ServiceTool
There are two different ways to connect the ServiceTool to the product:

- A direct ethernet connection by using a patch cable between the product and the
service PC (can be used for all service tasks).
- A network connection, wired or wireless, through the Network Link router (the
most convenient method, but must not be used for software updates).

Direct ethernet connection (patch cable)

Ethernet patch cable

Service PC
Connect the service PC as shown and follow the instructions in the ServiceTool.

Network Link router connection

! This connection may be the most convinient type, but must not be used for
software updates.

Adjustments 4.3

Adjustments

Useful Information
When exchanging PCB10, Mainboard (Service module) it is necessary to perform
an adjustment. Actually, the adjustments is more an initialisation of the serial
number and a software update to the module than it is an adjustment. It is very
important to perform this kind of adjustment before the product is left to the
customer.

Exchange of PCB10, Mainboard (Service module)

When exchanging PCB10, Mainboard (Service module) remember to make an
EEPROM backup/restore from the defective module with the ServiceTool MKII. The
exchanged module contains valuable data such as serial no., type no., pincode etc.
which must be restored into the new PCB10, Mainboard.

! The data is not transferred (locked) to the new module until you have been in
contact with the pincode protection or after 12 hours connected with mains. This
means that you can try out a new PCB10, Mainboard without transferring the
products serial no., etc. by using the Service Code (11111).

If EEPROM backup is not possible

In the case where the PCB10, Mainboard is defective and it is not possible to make
an EEPROM backup, a new pre-programmed one must be ordered in the Bang &
Olufsen Retail System under ‘Daily Use\Master Code’. Mark the EEPROM field to
order a new PCB10, Mainboard, and fill in the form below.

! When the serial number has been transferred to the microprocessor, it can only be
used for this specific product; it must be sent back to Bang & Olufsen’s module
repair department as an exchange module to be erased again.

Software update
When PCB10, Mainboard has been replaced, the new module must be updated to
latest software version. This is important to ensure the best possible customer
experience. Software upgrade can be done in two ways:

- Software upgrade by ServiceTool (ServicecTool must be up to date).

- Software upgrade from Customer Configuration Menu, see from page 2.2 (this
approach requires Internet connection).

If for some reason faulty software are implemented, it is possible to swap the
software with the original software (factory software). The ServiceTool is required
for this operation.
4.4 Final check after repair

Final check after repair

The final check after repair describes the activities needed to ensure that the
product is returned in perfect condition to the customer. This includes:

- Insulation test.
- Check product information.
- Restore the setup and check connections, picture and sound.
- Final cleaning of the product.

Insulation test
Each set must be insulation tested after having been dismantled. Make the test
when the set is reassembled and ready to be returned to the customer.
Flashovers must not occur during the testing procedure!

Make the insulation test as follows:

Short-circuit the two pins of the mains plug and connect them to one of the
terminals of the insulation tester. Connect the other terminal to ground on the
aerial socket.

! To avoid damaging the set, it is essential that both terminals of the insulation
tester have good contact.
Slowly turn the voltage control of the insulation tester until a voltage of 2.5 kV
and max. 10 mA is obtained. Maintain that voltage for one second, then slowly
turn it down again.

Product Info
The scope of this check is to ensure the following:
- The product has maintained the correct identity.
- The product is set to the correct Option.

Procedure:
- Enter Service Configuration Menu (described on page 2.2).
- Choose PRODUCT INFO.
- Check the serial number is correct for the product.
- Return to Service Configuration Menu and choose ROLES.
- Check Option setting is correct.

Customer setup
Restore the product to the customer setup.
Remember to inform the customer of any changes that have been made in the
user setup, due to procedures in the Service Manual, such as Connections, Sound,
Picture, etc.
Final check after repair 4.5

Check audio outputs

Check that audio outputs are working correctly.

Clean the product

Never user alcohol or other solvents to clean any part of the product.
Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the surfaces of the product.

Cabinet surfaces
Wipe dust off the surfaces using a dry, soft cloth. Remove grease stains or
persistent dirt with a soft, lint-free, firmly wrung cloth, dipped in a solution of
water containing only a few drops of mild detergent, such as washing-up liquid.
