Checklist: Subcutaneous Injection Using Vial
1 Appearance
2 Wash hands with germX
3 Gather supplies, check medications against patient`s chart, check expiration date
Check for any contraindications to performing a subcutaneous injection

Check if the patient has any allergies
5 Select appropriate syringe & needle, open without contaminating
6 Clean top of vial with alcohol swab
7 Inject air into the vial equal to the dose you want to draw up
8 Draw up correct amount of medication, removing air (teacher will check correct amount)
Go to the patient, introduce self, explain procedure to the patient and take consent from

the patient
10 Ask patient`s 3 names, check medication again with the patient`s name
11 Provide privacy
12 Choose appropriate site, position & drape patient, exposing only injection site
13 Put on clean gloves
14 Clean site appropriate with alcohol cotton & keep cotton in non-dominant fingers
With non-dominant hand gather skin up between thumb & fingers (pinching the skin

increases the depth of the subcutaneous tissue available)
Insert needle quickly (with dart like motion) at 45-90 angle degree (aiming to remain in
16
the subcutaneous tissue layer). with the bevel facing upwards
17 Move non-dominant hand to stabilize syringe near needle hub
Inject medication slowly until all medication injected (10 second for each ml) Wait ten

second
Remove needle quickly, apply gentle pressure over the injection site with a cotton swab
19
or gauze and avoid rubbing the site
20 Do not Aspirate, do not Massage over injection site
21 Recap needle as taught in class
22 Put needle and syringe in trash can (Safety Box)
23 Remove gloves & wash hands with germX
