CHARITIES IN THE UK
In 1824, in a café in London, a group of men founded the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals). It was the first organisation to save and protect animals. In the beginning,
people thought it was strange to care about violence to animals. In 1840, thanks to Queen Victoria,
the organisation was called the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
The organisation has had two hundred branches in the UK so far.
The Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB) is one of the most popular charities for the blind in
the UK where there are over a million people suffering from eye disability. With necessary
information and useful services, the RNIB help people with vision impairment to have a life of a
normal person. The organisation also tries their best to find out the causes of blindness and the
effective way to prevent, cure and treat the disease. The RNIB has offices everywhere in the UK.
Mencap is a charity whose aim is to protect the people who are suffering from any kinds of learning
disability and being treated unfairly in society. It is the discrimination and lack of care and funding
from a community that make people with learning disabilities feel unfortunate. Mencap raises
awareness of learning disabilities and offers the people with learning disability opportunities to
attend school, have a house to live and a job to do. The organisation also gives support and advice
