Omeprazole

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor used to suppress gastric acid secretion. It is dosed at 500mg once daily by mouth and works by inhibiting the hydrogen/potassium ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells. Common side effects include headache, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Nurses should assess bowel sounds and abdomen for pain and ensure patients take the medication as prescribed before eating and do not break or chew the capsule.

Proton pump Inhibitor

500mg 1tab. TID

Suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting hydrogen/ potassium ATPase enzyme system in gastric acid parietal cell; characterized as gastric acid pump inhibitor since it blocks final step of acid production.

Hypersensitivity Precautions: Pregnancy , lactation, Children.

Headache, dizziness, asthenia, diarrhea, abdominal pain, taste perversion, fatigue and malaise.

Assess: Bowel sounds q8h, abdomen for pain. Administer: Before eating; swallow capsule whole, do not break, crush, or chew. Teach the patient/ family: That diabetic patient should know hypoglycemia may occur. To avoid alcohol, salicylates, and ibuprofen; may cause GI irritation.
