lesson one
Fingerstyle revision
The finger names
Before starting the guitar lessons in this book, lets do some revision to make sure you can
remember the names of the fingers on both the picking hand and the fingering hand.

Fingers
Here are both hands to make clear the M

difference between them, however you
should know the fingers of the left hand. L

P = primary
I = index P
M = middle
A = annular
L = little

Knowing the finger names is important.

The fingerpicking patterns will appear above the music or tab and the finger numbers are
used to get chord fingering correct.

exercise 4 - The chord changes in the chorus are the hardest in the tune. If you find it
easier you can replace the Barre B7 with an open B7. Notice that the lost note of the
fingerpicking pattern has been removed giving more time for the chord changes.

Here is a selection of three of the most important scales you could or should know.

People with smaller hands tend to choose option 1 of the scale and people with a larger
reach tend to choose the option 2. The note that is played differently is marked in red.

drone notes
When a note is repeated over and over it can be called a drone note. Some forms of
eastern music use drones most of the time and even have instruments designed to create
a drone tone. This sample section of the song shows the drone note marked in red.

hammer ons and pull offs
Hammer ons
A hammer on is where you hammer the string with the fretting finger so that it rings without
the need to be picked. In fingerstyle guitar this is most commonly seen as part of a chord,

Exercise 1 - Try to hammer on with each finger.

pull offs
A pull off is where you pull a fretted finger off the string plucking the string as you remove it.
Commonly you will have to pull off to another fretted note, so it is important to have the
note you are pulling away to fretted before you attempt the pull off. Here are some basic
pull off exercises to help you master the technique.

Exercise 1 - Try these pull offs.

tune
Estudio in 3/8 time - Fernando Sor
This tune is another revision lesson so the fingering and the finger picking for this study is
relatively easy. The tune is in 3/8 time which means there are 3 quavers per bar, however
read the tab carefully because the tune starts on the 3rd beat of the bar and the repeats
occur on the third beat of the bar in bar 1, bar 9 and the last bar. Andantino is a tune
that is lighter and less stompy than an andante.

Note

Two part counterpoint.

This tune as a good example of 2 part counterpoint. This style of music was first named
and written about in any by J. S. Bach. The style obviously existed before Bach, but he
observed it and came up with a set of rules for better results in the technique. It is
basically where two musical parts complement one another to produce a melody and a
harmony. Bach noticed certain techniques produced better results and documented
them. The basic precept for these rules is that the parts should complement one another
without parroting one another but some aspects of the music should stay the same
throughout the parts, for example build ups or build downs.

Two examples of the counterpoint technique in this piece.

1. The parts can complement one another by moving in opposite directions.
2. One part can go fast whilst the other part goes slow.

Bar 7 Bar 12
The harmony and melody are The melody moves slowly whilst
going in opposite directions the harmony moves fast.

Notes and chords

The main riff that is repeated throughout this tune can be greatly simplified by holding the
first first double-stop in place whilst you play through the second and the third double-
stop. This might feel awkward at first, but it will greatly increase your speed, flow and
accuracy whilst playing that part of the tune.

Bridge
The style of tab below is often used when two guitar parts are playing simultaneously. You
can even find music where the score for all the instruments are displayed in parallel.
Note that the lines at the beginning and the end of each line are joined together and this
shows that the parts are being played simultaneously.

lesson fifteen
revise the blocking technique
quickly revise the technique before continuing. Blocking is where you play 2, 3, or 4
strings simultaneously fingerstyle. This technique sound different than when you strum the
guitar because the notes sound simultaneously when fingerpicking where as the notes
sound one note at a time when strumming.

Exercise 1 - Try these pull offs.

raking the strings
Raking is where you play a chord or arpeggio almost as if strumming it but not as quickly
as strumming so you can hear each note individually. When learning to rake the speed is
quite often the hardest thing to get rite because the notes should be heard individually
but not so slow the notes are completely isolated. Usually a rake should fit in half a beat
or less. rake

Medieval slow dance - Sad Fantasy
You might recall this tune from month 4 of unit 2, where we covered it without the rakes. It
makes an interesting experiment to play this tune with the rakes and without the rakes and
compare the 2 versions and see how the rakes effect the feeling of the tune.

partial or half barre chords

IMPORTANT Even if you rely on the tablature to tell you the shape and position of the
chords it is well worth understanding the chords, at least a little.
What is a half barre chords ?
A partial or half barre chord is any chord that can be played without playing an open
strings. The important thing about this is the fact that the chord can be moved up the
neck of the guitar to create different chords.

one fret down, therefore fret 2 (for example) is both F# and Gb.

In line 6 of Page 1 & 2 there is a difficult pull off. To play this smoothly it helps to play a
Dsus or Dsus4
the D before starting the pull off. By having the D ready to play, the pull off should sound
correct and flow smoothly into the D chord. You might need to practice this a few times.

Dynamics, expression One
Volume, velocity
Volume or velocity can be used to great effect to give your music more feeling. Using expression can make
you as a musician sound more skilled than they actually are, and the lack of expression can make the
music sound poor and badly played. Velocity and volume are the same most of the time, but on electronic
instruments volume is how load the instrument is and velocity is how hard the instrument is played.

Dynamics, expression two
speed changes
The speed at which you play a tune can be increased and decreased to create an emotional response

important to be aware of this fact at this stage of learning guitar.

Note. I have shown Ritardando
means the same thing. The Dynamics instructions we have looked at so far are only a small sample of the
amount of musical instructions that exist, however it is more sensible to learn them in small sections.

Accelerando accel. - (accelerate) speed up the tempo

Rallentando rall. - (decelerate)slow down the tempo
Ritardando ritard. - (decelerate)slow down the tempo
A tempo A tempo - Return to original tempo

When you play the tune this time try to put your own expression into it. When you are

left plenty of blank space above the tab and removed some of the repeats in order to
make it easier for you to write your dynamics in.
