Subject : Religion 5
Topic : Symbolism and Human Nature

What is a sign or a symbol?

Symbols are essential in order for us to get the meaning of a thing or

situation. They play a necessary role in the way man communicates his
feelings and thoughts. They suggest ideas that words cannot express. For
example, the love of parents for their children can be observed through
their warm embrace or through the well-being of children. Instead of using
words in order to show love for their children , parents may express it
through other means. These are called signs and symbols. A sign or a
symbol is defined as an object , quality , or event that stands for something
else. It represents a material not visible or present. It can also be
understood as something used in order to express meaning.

Can we find signs and symbols in the Bible?

Yes. In the Bible , there are many signs and symbols that the sacred authors
used in order to communicate the presence of God. Jesus made use of signs
and symbols when he preaches so His followers will understand His
message better.

How does God reveal Himself to man?

God reveals Himself to man through signs and symbols. For example , God
speaks to man through the visible creation. The beauty of nature reveals a
powerful Creator and loving God. These observable realities are a way for
God to express His love for us.

What does the Catholic Church tell us about signs and symbols?

The Catechism for the Catholic Church(1145-1152) teaches us that since a

human being is both body and spirit, man expresses and observes ideas
through signs and symbols. They are needed in order for man to understand
a gesture , or deliver a message through language and actions.
