Part A: Proposal
“Welded Connection and Their Types"
1.0 Rationale: -
▪ When two members are connected by means of welds, such a connection
is known as welded connection. Welding offers an opportunity to the
designer to achieve a more efficient use of the materials. Earlier designers
considered welds as less fatigue resistant. It was believed that attaining
good welds at site is impossible. Now a day, with the advances in the field
of nondestructive testing methods (NDT), testing and quality control of
welds became easier. This gives the designers enough courage to explore
the possibilities and capabilities of welded connections. Speedy
construction is facilitated by using welded connections. Weight of welded
connections is relatively low and hence cuts cost of construction. Since
there is no reduction of holes the gross cross section is effective in carrying
loads.
2.0 Literature Review: -
▪ Welded connections play a pivotal role in structural engineering and
various industries, offering a reliable and efficient means of joining
components. Several types of welded connections are commonly
employed. Fillet welds, characterized by their triangular cross-section,
provide robust connections and are suitable for both lap and T-joints. On
the other hand, butt welds, where the ends of two components are joined
in line, offer strength and efficiency. Groove welds, including single and
double V-groove, are used in thicker materials, ensuring deep penetration
and high load-bearing capacity. Plug and slot welds are specialized types,
applied primarily for specific design needs. Each type of welded
connection offers distinct advantages and challenges, enabling engineers
to tailor connections to the demands of the project. Proper weld design,
inspection, and quality control are essential for the structural integrity and
safety of welded structures.

7.0 Output of Micro – Project: -
7.1 What is Welded Connection?
▪ Welded connections are connections whose components are joined
together primarily by welds
7.2 Types of Welded Connection: -
Following are the types of welded connection: -
▪ Fillet Weld: -
▪ A weld of approximately triangular cross section joining two
surfaces approximately at right angles to each other in a lap joint,
T-joint, or corner joint
▪ Following are the types of fillet weld: -
o Tee Joint: -

o Lap Joint: -
- 12 -
Micro - Project A. G. P. P. I. DSR [22502]
o Corner Joint: -
▪ Butt Weld: -
▪ Butt welding is when two pieces of metal are placed end-to-end
without overlap and then welded along the joint (as opposed to lap
joint weld, where one piece of metal is laid on top of the other, or
plug welding, where one piece of metal is inserted into the other).
Importantly, in a butt joint, the surfaces of the workpieces being
joined are on the same plane and the weld metal remains within the
planes of the surfaces.
