INDIGENOUS
GOVERNANCE
Political Science
THE SYSTEM
Indigenous Peoples are the original habitants of a specific geographic
region, despite the fact that they were colonized and subjugated to
European powers and colonies in the past.

Thereby, the term of Indigenous Governance refers to the combination

of rules, laws, codes or political configurations that exhibit the several
ways those peoples governed themselves and remains doing so
regardless of occupation or land dispossession.
HOW IT WORKS?
INDIGENOUS GOVERNANCE CAN BE
DIVIDED INTO 3 MAIN CATEGORIES.

Practices materialized independently or, previous to, colonization or

oppression by a external entity power. Indigenous peoples had already
1. existing forms of political community before their domination. The
forms of government present in this scope may include diplomatic
relationships between distinct indigenous groups, social hierarquies,
and collective organizations into tribes, clans, or ceremonial activities.

Practices that take place in coordination with the colonial power, being
these sanctioned either formally or informally. In various cases
2. throughout history, indigenous people have integrated themselves into
the regulations or political structures imposed by the colonial control,
either by force or by choice or both. Examples of that could be the
typical treaty negotiations or implementation of political participation
within the governing bodies of the colonial power.

Practices that evolved against impositions coming from colonial power as

3.
a form of resistance. Indigenous peoples have practiced self government
counteracts to try to cease the negatives effects caused by exploitation
and domination from colonization. These structures of resistance may
include may include the organization and coordination of movements
toward decolonization, antiracist activism, and warrior societies.
MAIN
CHARACTERISTICS

Indigenous governances are tipically fluid and flexible, meaning that there are
not settled specific characteristics within their political structures. It is always
changing with the needs of each group and with the colonial setting itself.
EXAMPLE
EXAMPLE
CANADA
Indigenous peoples from Canada have a straight forward
constitutional relationship with the Crown, being symbolized by a set of
codes and rights, named Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, that allows them
to have political participation on the general decisions, including the
freedom to self-government. It is a relationshop based on mutual
respect and recognition as an attempt to minimize negative effects
caused by the past colonization and oppresion of these people.
