RIZAL’S LIFE and WORKS

Activity No.4 Role Playing of a chosen chapter scene from JRP’s 2 Famous Novels
INTRODUCTION:
JOSE P. RIZAL is known to making the resolution of bearing personal
sacrifice instead of the incoming revolution, believing that a peaceful
stand is the best way to avoid further suffering in the country and loss
of Filipino lives. In Rizal's own words, "I consider myself happy for being
able to suffer a little for a cause which I believe to be sacred. I believe
further that in any undertaking, the more one suffers for it, the surer its
success. If this be fanaticism may God pardon me, but my poor judgement
does not see it as such.
We are entirely in accord in admitting the existence of God. How can I doubt
His when I am convinced of mine. Whoever recognizes the effect recognizes the cause. To
doubt God is to doubt one's own conscience, and in consequence, it would be to doubt
everything; and then what is life for? Now then, my faith in God, if the result of a ratiocination
may be called faith, is blind, blind in the sense of knowing nothing. I neither believe nor
disbelieve the qualities which many attribute to Him; before theologians' and philosophers'
definitions and lucubration’s of this ineffable and inscrutable being I find myself smiling. Faced
the conviction of seeing myself confronting the supreme Problem, which confused voices seek
to explain to me, I cannot but reply: 'It could be'; but the God that I foreknow is far more grand,
far more good: Plus Supra!...I believe in (revelation); but not in revelation or revelations which
each religion or religions claim to possess. Examining them impartially, comparing them and
scrutinizing them, one cannot avoid discerning the human 'fingernail' and the stamp of the time
in which they were written... No, let us not make God in our image, poor inhabitants that we are
of a distant planet lost in infinite space. However, brilliant and sublime our intelligence may be,
it is scarcely more than a small spark which shines and in an instant is extinguished, and it
alone can give us no idea of that blaze, that conflagration, that ocean of light. I believe in
revelation, but in that living revelation which surrounds us on every side, in that voice, mighty,
eternal, unceasing, incorruptible, clear, distinct, universal as is the being from whom it
proceeds, in that revelation which speaks to us and penetrates us from the moment we are
born until we die. What books can better reveal to us the goodness of God, His love, His
providence, His eternity, His glory, His wisdom? 'The heavens declare the glory of God, and the
firmament showed his handiwork. In El Filibusterismo, Rizal had Father Florentino say: “...our
liberty will (not) be secured at the sword's point...we must secure it by making ourselves worthy
of it. And when a people reaches that height God will provide a weapon, the idols will be
shattered, tyranny will crumble like a house of cards and liberty will shine out like the first dawn.

think is the significance of the role you are playing in the play? Why do you say that you
have a vital role in doing it. Explain it elaborately from your own perspective.
1.
In "Noli Me Tangere" by Jose Rizal, Donya Victorina is a complex character who represents
the aspirations and contradictions of the colonial elite in the Philippines during the Spanish
colonial period. As Donya Victorina, my role is pivotal in portraying the socio-political
landscape of that era and highlighting the themes of identity, social climbing, and cultural
hybridity.

Donya Victorina is a Filipino woman who aspires to be European. She is married to a Spanish
man, Don Tiburcio de Espadaña, and constantly boasts about her European connections and
heritage. Through her character, the play explores the phenomenon of colonial mentality,
where Filipinos, like Donya Victorina, internalize and emulate the culture and values of their
colonizers in an attempt to elevate their social status.

As Donya Victorina, I embody this struggle for identity and acceptance within a colonial
society. My character's obsession with all things European reflects the pervasive influence of
Spanish culture and the desire of many Filipinos to distance themselves from their indigenous
roots. By exaggerating her connections to Europe and adopting Spanish mannerisms, Donya
Victorina seeks validation and acceptance from the colonial elite.

Furthermore, Donya Victorina serves as a satirical critique of the colonial elite's hypocrisy
and superficiality. Despite her efforts to appear European, she is often ridiculed by both
Spanish and Filipino characters in the play, highlighting the absurdity of her aspirations.
Through her character, the play exposes the absurdity of colonial attitudes and the futility of
trying to deny one's heritage in pursuit of social acceptance.

From my perspective, portraying Donya Victorina is significant because it allows me to delve

into the complexities of Filipino identity under colonial rule. By embodying her character, I
can explore themes of cultural assimilation, social mobility, and the enduring legacy of
colonialism in the Philippines. Additionally, my portrayal of Donya Victorina helps to
humanize her character and convey the universal struggle for acceptance and belonging,
which transcends historical and cultural contexts.

In summary, my role as Donya Victorina in "Noli Me Tangere" is vital in shedding light on

the complexities of Filipino identity and the socio-political dynamics of the colonial period.
Through her character, the play critiques colonial mentality, explores themes of social
hierarchy, and highlights the enduring legacy of colonialism in shaping Filipino society. As an
actor, portraying Donya Victorina allows me to engage with these themes in a meaningful
way and contribute to a deeper understanding of Filipino history and culture.

whose struggles and aspirations remain profoundly relatable. It's a privilege to be
a part of bringing this slice of Philippine history to life on stage and to contribute
to the ongoing dialogue about our nation's past, present, and future.

Collaborating with fellow performers, directors, stage crew, and production staff has fostered
a strong sense of camaraderie and mutual support. We've spent countless hours rehearsing,
brainstorming ideas, and refining our performances, each person contributing their unique
skills and perspectives to the production.

One of the most remarkable lessons I've gained from portraying a role in Rizal's "Noli Me

for social justice, education, and national identity resonates strongly with contemporary
issues, reminding us of the ongoing struggle for freedom and equality.

Ultimately, the most remarkable lesson I've gained from this experience is the importance of
collaboration, empathy, and perseverance in pursuing a common goal. By working together
and drawing inspiration from Rizal's legacy, we've not only created a compelling piece of
theater but also forged meaningful connections and shared memories that will endure long
after the curtain falls.
