CHAPTER 4

EXERCISE #5

ANSWER:
Using NIOSH Lifting Equation,

Here, the horizontal Multiplier Factor (HM) = 30 cm = 0.83

Vertical Multiplier factor (VM) = 50 cm = 0.93

Distance multiplier factor (DM) = 50 cm = 0.90

Frequency multiplier factor (FM) = 0.94 (1 min)

Asymmetric Multiplier Factor (AM) = 0.9

Coupling Multiplier Factor (CM) = 1

The acceptability of the operation=?

We know that,

23×HM×VM×DM×FM×AM×CM= Recommended weight limit (RWL)

RWL=23×0.83×0.93×0.90×0.94×0.9×1

=13.5176 kg

Therefore, the calculated recommended weight of clothing for shipment is 13.5176 kg which is
less than the weight of shipment of clothing which was 16kg. So, this operation will increase the
risk of lifting related accidents. Hence, the acceptability of the operation is less.
CASE STUDY #3

ANSWER:

I would suggest following steps to stop this type of similar accidents in future:

1. A proper communication system should be developed between all the working staffs in the
plant by organizing the meetings before beginning any kind of machineries.
2. A clear checklist of the operation should be prepared to confirm and sign by those who are
working in that operation.
3. Training should be given to the workers in plant in daily basis so that they will know about
caustic solutions and its risks.
4. The warning sign should be stick near the working sites where the materials which are
harmful are used.
5. Present the award to the employee who immediately reports the safety concerns or any
near-misses in order to enhance the culture of informing.
6. Check all near-misses and incidents sites on regular basis to find out the ways of improving
them.
