Subject: Library Media Program Evaluation
I have worked to evaluate the School Library Media Program at Cedar Ridge Elementary using
the rubric from the Georgia Department of Education. My findings and recommendations are
listed below. I have also attached a copy of the rubric for your review.
Areas of Proficiency:
Information Literacy Skills - The school librarian works to provide lessons that include the
current state standards. The standards are used as a basis of teaching. In order to move from
proficient to exemplary in this area, the teacher and school librarian must frequently collaborate
to identify standards that need to be taught in the library.
Collaboration - The school librarian currently collaborates with administrators and the
instructional specialist to plan for lessons in the library. Each grade level class receives the same
instruction when they visit the library based on a target standard. The school has decided to focus
on writing in the library this year. In order to move from proficient to exemplary in this area, the
school librarian must collaborate with all teachers, including SPED teachers, to meet the needs of
all learners. The school librarian should meet with teachers during their collaborative planning
meetings to achieve this.
Diverse Services - The school librarian and media clerk currently select resources that are
diverse and reach the needs of various students. In order to move from proficient to exemplary in
this area, the librarian should meet with support teachers like SPED and ESOL to identify needs
and resources to be added to the library.
Flexible Scheduling - The library staff is currently available throughout the day. Students can
visit the library before school officially begins. In order to move from proficient to exemplary,
the library should have hours after school for students to visit. Some evening hours could be
scheduled for parents to visit.
OPAC Usage - The OPAC system is currently available on several computers around the school.
Weeding with the use of the OPAC system is an ongoing process. In order to move from
proficient to exemplary, the library should be weeding materials more frequently and providing
more resources online to students outside of the school.
Funding - The library program receives state and local funding that exceeds the minimum
requirements from the state. The library also receives funding from the book fair. In order to
move from proficient to exemplary, the librarian should be working with administrators and
school board members to plan the budget using long range goals. Funding can also be provided
from grants and business partnerships.
Areas of Exemplary:
Resource Usage - The library program is a critical element of the reading program. The library
houses all resources for teachers and parents.
Staffing/Adult Supervision - The library staff is fully employed with a full time media clerk,
media specialist, and technology support specialist. Students are supervised by an adult at all
times in the library.
Square Footage - The library is larger than the required state square footage. It recently had an
extension added that houses the library classroom and early readers/picture books collection.
Technology Resources - Teachers have access to several smart board throughout the building.
All teachers are equipped with a school provided laptop that can project to screens in all
classrooms. Teachers are also given access to streaming services. The streaming service is used
daily for production of the news show. Various resources are available to students on a LAN
throughout the school. Students visit the library frequently for information retrieval and use
subscriptions for research purposes.
Administrative Support - The board office has a director of digital learning that communicates
frequently with the school librarians. The librarians meet regularly for updates with the director.
School administrators foster a climate of collaboration between the librarian and teachers. The
school librarian meets regularly with administrators to discuss the role of the library and
purchases for student enrichment.
Board of Education Involvement - The board office has a clear policy for updating resources in
the library. The policy is reviewed and updated annually.
Staff Development - The librarian seeks to enhance her skills through the use of professional
development and certification upgrades. She regularly attends professional development sessions
and is involved in professional learning networks. She provides teacher training on technology
and other resources.
Areas of Basic Proficiency:
Student Achievement Assessment - The classroom teacher is responsible for assessing student
achievement. The librarian does not meet with teachers to develop rubrics for student
achievement. In order to move from basic to proficient, the librarian should meet often with
teachers to review student data and provide activities that support student learning and
achievement.
GALILEO Usage - GALILEO is not frequently used in the schools. Students do not have access
to GALILEO on the single sign on platform. In order to move from basic to proficient,
GALILEO should be used more often as a research tool. The librarian can provide teacher and
student training annually.
