10 EXPERIMENTAL INSTRUCTIONS

Lesson 3

MEASURE AND INSPECT STRAIGHTNESS,

FLATNESS, AND PERPENDICULARITY

I. PURPOSE
- Know how to measure and check straightness and flatness.
- Determine vertical and horizontal degrees.
- Know how to check squareness.
- Know how to use a digital clock.

II. TOOLS
- Surface plate - Type of Feeler gauge (0.05 -1.0mm).
- Straightedge
- Dial indicator stand
- Square ruler

III. TOOL INTRODUCTION

1- Dial indicator (H.2.1)

2- Dial indicator stand

Synchronize the dial onto the stand (Fig. 3.1).

IV IMPLEMENTATION
1- Check the straightness and flatness
Rectangular box shape details with size (150 - 100 - 40) mm.
Method 1: Use the medicine regularly.
- Place the ruler along the edges and boundaries of the part (Fig. 3.2) and use a Feeler gauge to
determine the height of the gap between the ruler and the edge of the part.

Method 2: Use the surface plate and the dial indicator.

- Slide the dial indicator along the edges of the part to determine the straightness (Fig. 3.3).
- Each surface is measured in 6 directions and repeated twice.
- Determine the flatness of the plane: the flatness of the plane is the largest non-
linear degree.

2- Check squareness
- Details to be checked that require squareness between surfaces (Fig. 3.4)

12 EXPERIMENTAL INSTRUCTIONS

- Measure the squareness using a square meter and a level, use the level to determine the
gap Δmin, Δmax. (Fig. 3.5). Perform the measurement three times with different position, each at a
length L as requested

L (50) mm, record the results in table 1.
