Cold compresses

Cold application

Cold application is the application of a cold agent cooler then skin either a in a moist or dry
form

On the surface of the skin

Purpose

 To reduce pain and body temperature


 To anesthetize area
 To control hemorrhage
To control the growth of bacteria
 To prevent gangrene
 To prevent edema
 To reduce inflammation
 To prevent comfort

Types

Local cold application

Dry cold =ice bag, ice collar, ice pack

Moist cold= application is ice to suck, cold compress and evaporation lotion

General cold application

Moist heat =cold sponging cold bath cold packs

Indication

 Pain
 Swelling
 Sport injuries
 Wound healing
 Temperature
 Dental pain

Equipment

 Bowel with ice water


 Gauze piece
 Mackintosh

Cold compresses

 Towel
 Small cotton balls in a bowl
 Thermometer

Procedure

 When the time is over remove Wash hands


 Explain the procedure to the patient
 Arrange the articles at the bed side
 Provide privacy
 Place the patient in comfortable position
 Bring the patient to the edge of the bed
 Place the mackintosh and towel u under the patient to protect the bed
 Pack the ear with cotton balls if compress to be applied to forehead
 Take the gaze piece immerse it in the water wring it
 Change it as soon as it become warm
 Check the temperature every 15 minutes
 Keep the constant watch on the cooler of the skin test the skin for numbness

After care

 the compress
 Wipe the part and make the patient comfortable
 Take out the cotton balls from the ears
 Inspect the part for discoloration or numbness
 Place the patient in a comfortable position
 Check the vital sign
 Replace the articles
 Wash hand
 Record the procedure in nurse’s record sheet
 Record the vital sign in TPR sheet

Physiological effect of cold application

 Peripheral vasoconstriction
 Decrease blood flow
 Muscles one decrease
 Decrease oxygen consumption
