Description:
Recently, the use of radio collars in the cheetah reintroduction project in Kuno
Wildlife Sanctuary, Madhya Pradesh, India, has resulted in unexpected
setbacks, with cheetahs experiencing neck wounds and septicaemia, an
infection of the blood by bacteria.
In Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park where African cheetahs have been
released into the wild as part of Project Cheetah, two more cheetahs – Aasha
and Dheera – have been brought back to the enclosure for health examinations
and their radio collars taken off. This brings the number of cheetahs whose
radio collars have been removed to five, after the deaths of Tejas and Suraj last
week that experts have said were caused by radio collar infections.

What Is Carbon Footprint?

A carbon footprint is the total amount of

greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide, that are
released into the atmosphere due to human activities
such as driving, using electricity, and producing goods. It
is used to measure the environmental impact of these
activities in terms of emissions. The carbon footprint
takes into account various factors, including energy
consumption, waste production, and lifestyle choices. It
reflects how daily actions contribute to climate change by adding greenhouse gases to
the atmosphere. Reducing one’s carbon footprint is crucial to mitigate global warming
and its harmful effects on ecosystems and human health.

 Effects Of Carbon Footprint:-

The effects of carbon footprint are as follows:

i. Increases global warming: More greenhouse gases are released, trapping heat and
raising the Earth’s temperature.

ii. Contributes to climate change: Accumulation of these gases causes unpredictable and
severe changes in weather patterns.

iii. Leads to extreme weather events: Carbon emissions increase the frequency of floods,
droughts, storms, and heatwaves.

iv. Disrupts ecosystems: Changing climates affect natural habitats, leading to species
migration or extinction.

v. Impacts human health: Air pollution from carbon emissions can cause respiratory
diseases, heart problems, and other health issues.

 Why Reducing Carbon Footprint Is Necessary?

Reducing the carbon footprint is crucial because it helps mitigate global warming
by lowering carbon emissions, which slows the rise in global temperatures and reduces
the severity of climate change. It also prevents extreme weather by decreasing the
frequency and intensity of events such as floods, droughts, and storms. Additionally,
cutting carbon footprints protects ecosystems by preserving natural habitats and
preventing species extinction through maintaining a stable climate. Lowering emissions
improves human health as it reduces air pollution, which can lead to fewer respiratory
and heart diseases. Furthermore, conserving resources by using fewer carbon-intensive
materials ensures the sustainability of vital resources like water and energy for future
generations. Lastly, reducing reliance on fossil fuels promotes the use of renewable
energy sources, supporting a cleaner and more sustainable future.

 Main sources of carbon emissions :-

Main sources of carbon emissions include:

i. Fossil fuel combustion: Burning coal, oil, and natural gas for electricity, heat, and
transportation.
ii. Deforestation: Cutting down trees reduces carbon absorption and releases stored
carbon.

iii. Agriculture: Livestock, rice production, and fertilizer use emit methane and other
greenhouse gases.

iv. Waste management: Landfills and improper waste disposal generate methane
emissions.

 Contribution Of Humans In Carbon Emissions :-

We contribute to carbon emissions through activities like:

i. Driving cars: Burning fuel in vehicles releases

carbon dioxide.

ii. Using electricity: Powering homes and devices

often relies on fossil fuels.

iii. Heating and cooling: Heating systems and air

conditioners consume energy, increasing
emissions.

iv. Consuming goods: Manufacturing, packaging,

and transporting products create carbon
emissions.

v. Food choices: Meat production, especially beef, and food waste contribute to
emissions.
vi. Air travel: Flying is a major source of carbon emissions from fuel combustion.

 How To Measure Carbon Footprint ?

Carbon footprint can be measured by tracking energy use, which involves

calculating the energy consumed from electricity, gas, and fuel in kilowatt-hours (kWh) or
liters to estimate associated emissions. Transportation emissions can be measured by
assessing the carbon output from vehicle fuel use, flights, and other travel modes based
on fuel consumption and distance traveled. Food consumption is evaluated by assessing
emissions from the production, transportation, and disposal of food, with particular
emphasis on meat and dairy products, as their production generates high emissions and
food waste contributes to methane emissions in landfills. Waste generation can be
estimated by calculating emissions from waste sent to landfills, where organic waste
decomposes and releases methane, and by considering the energy used in producing and
disposing of non-recyclable materials. Finally, online carbon footprint calculators can be
used to estimate an individual’s or household’s carbon footprint based on lifestyle habits
and activities, providing a clearer understanding of contributions to carbon emissions.

 How to reduce carbon footprint ?

To reduce your carbon footprint, you can start by using energy efficiently, such as
turning off lights and appliances when not in use and switching to energy-efficient
devices and LED bulbs. Opting for renewable energy sources like solar or wind can
significantly cut down emissions. Driving less by walking, biking, carpooling, or using
public transportation also helps reduce fuel consumption. Reducing, reusing, and
recycling can minimize waste and the need for single-use items.

Eating a sustainable diet by reducing meat consumption, especially beef, and

choosing locally grown foods lowers your environmental impact. Limiting air travel and
choosing direct flights when necessary reduces emissions from aviation. Planting trees or
supporting reforestation efforts can help absorb more carbon dioxide. Conserving water
also saves the energy used for water treatment and heating. Finally, supporting green
products made from sustainable materials helps lower your overall carbon footprint.
 What government and businesses can do to reduce carbon footprint?

Businesses and governments can play significant role in reducing carbon footprints
through various actions:

i. Adopt renewable energy: Businesses and governments can switch to renewable

energy sources like solar, wind, and hydropower for their operations and facilities,
reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

ii. Improve energy efficiency: Implement energy-efficient technologies and practices

in buildings, manufacturing, and transportation to lower emissions.

iii. Set emission reduction targets: Governments can create policies and regulations
that require industries to meet specific emission reduction goals, encouraging
innovation and Cleaner practices.

iv. Encourage green transportation:Governments can promote the use of electric

vehicles, public transportation, cycling, and walking by investing in infrastructure
like charging stations, bike lanes, and efficient public transit systems.
v. Support sustainable businesses:Governments can offer incentives, tax breaks, and
subsidies for companies that invest in eco-friendly practices, sustainable products,
and renewable energy.

vi. Promote circular economy:Businesses can adopt a circular economy model by

reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling, minimizing their environmental
impact.

vii. Implement carbon pricing: Governments can introduce carbon taxes or cap-and-
trade systems to put a price on carbon emissions, encouraging businesses to
reduce their carbon output.

viii. Educate and raise awareness: Both governments and businesses can promote
awareness about sustainability and climate change, encouraging consumers and
employees to make eco-friendly choices.

ix. Support reforestation and conservation:Businesses and governments can invest

in reforestation projects and conservation efforts to restore forests and protect
natural carbon sinks.

These steps can help reduce carbon footprints on a larger scale, benefiting both the
environment and society.

Conclusion:

The project Carbon Footprint is used in addressing the issue of carbon footprint is
essential for mitigating climate change and protecting the environment. By reducing
carbon emissions through the adoption of renewable energy sources, energy-efficient
technologies, and sustainable practices, individuals and industries can significantly
minimize their environmental impact. Moreover, increasing public awareness and
encouraging responsible behavior are critical steps toward achieving long-term
