Grade 5
Science LESSON PLAN
Processing information by the Nervous System
Ms. Eman Salah
• Next Generation Science Standards: MS-LS1-3 - Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of
interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells.
Objective of the lesson:
Students will be able to:
1- Identify the two main parts of the nervous system.
2- Label and describe the functions of the main parts of the nervous system.
3- Identify and describe the sensory organs.
4- Describe how messages are sent through the nervous system.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
• the respiratory, digestive, excretory, circulatory, muscular, and skeletal systems of the human body.
Assessment:
Students will create a labeled diagram of the human nervous system, identifying the main parts and their functions.
Key Points:
• The nervous system is divided into the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS).
• The brain is the control center of the nervous system.
• Neurons are the building blocks of the nervous system.
• Nerves transmit signals throughout the body.
• The spinal cord plays a crucial role in transmitting messages between the brain and the rest of the body.
Introduction to New Material:
• Present key points through a visual presentation with labeled diagrams.
• Address the common

Lesson Cycle
Do Now: (so teacher can write down the lesson information and objectives on board)
• Give students 2 minutes to tidy up and fix how they are sitting.
Do Now (5 minutes)
• Allow students to view the first slide and read the title.
• Ask students: Have you ever asked yourself How Did My Body Just Do That?”
Green-red
MOP: cardboards
• Green-Red Yes or NO
Hook / Opener:
Engage students with making a pizza order and communication center. PPT
• Ask students to brainstorm and share what they already know about how our
body communicates with itself.
I DO – Questioning Phase Sticky notes
1. How do your senses help you understand the world around you? PPT
2. How can your senses help keep you safe?
3. How do you think our heart knows to beat?
WE DO STEP (20 minutes)
4. How do you know when to wake up in the morning?
5. How do we know when something we eat is too hot?
6. How do we control our body temperature?
(15 minutes)
I DO STEP
7. What system of your body is considered the main control station?
8. What is the Nervous System?
9. What are the components of the Nervous System?
10. What does the nervous system look like?
11. What is the purpose of the Nervous System?
12. Explain the difference between the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous
system.
13. How does the brain receive and interpret signals from your senses, such as sight and
hearing?
• Provide worksheets with guided questions about the CNS and PNS.
• Start with simple questions about basic neuron structure and gradually
increase the complexity.
• Monitor student performance by walking around the classroom and
providing feedback.
MOP:
- Volunteers
- Group Discussion
- Cold call
WE DO - Group Activity/Investigation Phase
Divide the students into groups
Group setup 4 groups - 3-4 students per group according to absence
Task: (In your group)
How does the nervous system help you react quickly when you touch something hot?
Expected outcome and success criteria:
We DO (10 Minutes)
1. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the role of the nervous system in detecting
and responding to hot stimuli.
2. Explain the process of sensory input, transmission, and motor output involved in
the rapid reaction.
3. Draw to enhance the explanation effectively.
Notes:
• Encourage students to use their notes and textbooks for reference.
• Set a clear expectation for completion and accuracy.
• Set behavioral expectations for work time, such as active participation, respectful
collaboration, and attentiveness.
MOP:
• Group Discussion
• Think – pair – share
YOU DO – Reflection and Review Phase

CLOSURE (5
- Choose one of the following tasks:
minutes)
- Imagine you are a nerve cell. Describe the journey of a message from your fingertip to
your brain and back again.
- Analyze the effects of stress on the nervous system and why it is important to avoid it.
- Discuss the importance of sleep for the health and functioning of the nervous system.
Homework:
• Ask students to research and write a short paragraph on the importance of
HW
protecting our nervous system from harm.
