Magnetism Tutorial - 1

(Q1) In hydrogen atom, an electron revolves around a nucleus in an orbit of 0.53 Å radius. If
the frequency of revolution of an electron is 6.6  1015 Hz, find the magnetic moment of the
orbiting electron and calculate numerical value of Bohr magneton.

(Q2) Determine the magnetisation and flux density in silicon, if its magnetic susceptibility is –
4.2  10–6 and the magnetic field in it is 1.19  105 Am–1. What would be the value of the
relative permeability of the material?

Here magnetisation is presented with the symbol I instead of M.

(Q3) Find the percentage increase in magnetic induction when the space within a current-
carrying
toroid is filled with magnesium. Given χ for magnesium as 1.2  10–5.

(Q4) Calculate the diamagnetic susceptibility of He assuming that the two electrons are
contributing
to its diamagnetism. Consider the mean radius of the atom as 0.6 Å and N = 28  1026 per m3.

(Q5) Assuming the susceptibility of a diamagnetic material as –5.6  10–6 and its structure as
a body-centred cubic with a lattice constant 2.55 Å. Calculate the radius of its atom, if only one
electron per atom is contributing to diamagnetism.
Q1) For a system of electron spins in an applied magnetic field of 2 Tesla, the number of
down spins is twice as large as the number of up spins at a temperature T. Find T.
Q2) The saturation value of magnetization of iron is 1.74 × 106 A/m. Iron has body
centered cubic structure with an elementary cube edge of 0.286 nm. Calculate the average
number of Bohr magnetons (peff) contributed to the magnetization per atom.

Given a = 0.286 nm and Msat = 1.74 × 106 A/m

The value of B = 9.27 x 10-24 Am2.

Q3) The curie temperature of iron is 1043 K. Assume that iron atoms, when in metallic
form, have moments of two Bohr magneton per atom. Iron is body centred cubic (BCC)
with lattice parameter a = 0.286 nm. Calculate (i) the saturation magnetization (ii) the
curie constant (iii) the Weiss field constant (iv) the magnitude of the internal field.

Given = 1043 K
For two Bohr magneton per atom, m = 2B = 2 x 9.27 x 10-24 Am2 =
Q4) The molecular weight and density of a paramagnetic substance are 168.5 and 4370 kg/m3,
respectively, at room temperature. Considering the contribution to paramagnetism as two Bohr
magnetons per molecule, calculate its susceptibility and magnetization produced in it in a field
of 2 × 105 Am–1.

Given, H=2 × 105 Am–1.

Q5) Find the energy loss per hour in an iron core of a transformer, if the area of the B–
H loop is 250 J/m3 and the frequency of the alternating current is 50 Hz. The density of
iron is 7.5  103 kg/m3 and the mass of the core is 100 kg.
