The Liberator CNC Single Torch Universal Beam Coper

2 Peddinghaus Corporation

This Liberator has been specifically designed to help the structural steel fabricator to eliminate
costly layout, manual coping procedures and to fabricate larger profiles in less time. By expediting
processing times and minimizing labor costs, fabricators achieve greater profits while greatly
increasing their tonnage-per-month and tonnage-per-employee outputs. The Ocean Liberator

The Liberator can be installed in any structural steel fabrication shop or other operation where
layout and coping is required. It is capable of coping most steel profiles including:
• Beams up to 44" ( 1100mm) high (rolled or fabricated)
• Angles, channels and T-sections
• Flat bars
• Plates up to 48" (1200mm) wide
• Girders
• Tubes
• Truck frames, rail car frames, etc.

Main Characteristics
• Eliminates manual layout and coping
• Provides exceptional accuracy of cope placement, eliminating costly field modifications
• Easy installation
• Simple and easy to operate
• No computer experience required
• Automatic coping cycle
• Immediate payback on a low investment
• High quality and reliability plus dependable service

1. Machine Frame

The machine comprises a robust welded tube steel

framework that supports an overhead moving gantry
arrangement incorporating the torch arm. All power
and communication cables as well as the fuel and
oxygen hoses are neatly separated in conduits and
carriers on the framework.
The bolted-on portion of the lower frame is detachable for shipping purposes. The legs of
the lower frame have adjusting screws for setting the material pass line and for leveling.
The lower frame has a double roller and clamp arrangement on the entry side and on the
exit side for supporting and holding material against the built-in datum line fixture. Material
support rolls have provisions for adding chain sprockets so they may be powered by
connection to conveyor systems.

2. Moving Torch Head

With 5-axis motion, the torch can cut on all three surfaces of a beam with beveling
capability. The “X”, “Y” and “Z” axes of movement are provided by Siemens servo motors
and drives through precision rack-and-pinion systems. The “B” and “C” rotation axes are
actuated by Siemens servo motors and drives through precision worm gear reducers.

3. Cutting & Gas Equipment

The machine can utilize a variety of different fuel gases to
cut steel, such as: Acetylene; Natural Gas; Propane; Chem-
O-Lene; Butane; Flamex; Liquid Air; MAPP Gas; Propylene;
Apachi Gas, H.P.G.; RD; T- 9; and FG-2.
Cutting tips provided are general purpose, medium preheat
type. The machine is supplied with an “Extreme Duty Mixer”
for acetylene. This must be changed to a “Standard
Duty Mixer” for other gases.
A cutting torch featuring a 10-inch [250mm] long, 1/2” [12mm] diameter tip is mounted at
the bottom of the vertical arm which is supported by the overhead gantry. This long tip
makes it possible to reach the web of any rolled wide-flange sections. The small diameter
allows cutting very close up to the inside of the flange.
Depending on the tip size used, maximum material burnable is 6” [150mm] thick. This
allows for a broad range of structural products ranging in size, shape and thickness.
Speeds vary by the type cutting gas used and the thickness of materials.
4. Operation
The Liberator operates in a semi-automatic mode. First a
cut program is selected at the control. The machine
operator must move the material to be coped inside the
working area and actuate the clamps.
A laser beam zero reference device is installed on the
mobile gantry. Its projected line enables the operator to
manually jog the torch into place, even with the end of the
profile to be coped or at any given reference point.
Then an automatic cutting cycle takes over while the
operator monitors the progress, making adjustments on the
fly if necessary. At the end of a cut cycle, the torch moves automatically to the starting
point of the next cut, awaiting the operator to initiate the cycle.

5. Siemens 5 Axis 840Di Computer Numerical Control

The Siemens numerical control is superbly reliable and
compact. It is easy to install and adapts to many machine
configurations. It is perfectly suited for the Liberator and the
structural steel fabricator. The Siemens 840DI Controller is
the most reliable and widely deployed CNC controller on the
market.
5.1 Introduction – Data Storing
The numerical control has all the tools developed by Siemens
to facilitate program creation and provide appreciable operational
savings:
• Conversational programming
• Masked-time programming
• Graphic part representation – on-screen profile representations
• Absolute and incremental coordinate programming
• Program exchanges by floppy disk, USB drive, RS-232 connection, local network or
optional modem board
• Part program storage capacity: 1GB
• Industrial PC keyboard and LCD 10 color TFT 10.4” [265mm] video display panel

5.2 Axis Control

5 simultaneous axes, longitudinal and transverse positioning of the gantry (X and Y),
vertical movement of the torch head (Z) and rotation of the torch (B and C)
Automatic search of the axes without zero recycling
Controlled acceleration and deceleration
Backlash compensation
Axis calibration
5.3 Pentium PC
The control console is equipped with an industrial, micro-programmable 566 MHz controller
mounted in the unit which functions with the CNC processors for use with CAD/CAM and
other software tools.

5.7. Peddimat Basic Features

User friendly

Data input for 4 axes

Customer programmable and standard AISC shapes are stored to determine proper pre-
heat and burning rates

Peddimat Macro routines permit the user to create shape requirements such as a circle as
a standard. Once a macro is created, it is only necessary to define the size when needed
in future programs. For example, just the new diameter would be required for a circle.

Simple input of location, length and width of copes, notches, flange thinning, or other
customer defined macros

Programs for special burning requirements can be created simply with the Peddimat
program. For example, if a rectangle is desired in the web, the program must just define
the coordinates of the four corners.

Total optimization of the work cycle for standard copes, notches, rat holes, and flange
thinning as defined in the Peddimat program. The work cycle sequence for special burning
requirements such as a rectangle is defined by the programmer input.

The Peddimat master program approach permits burning requirements to be entered at the
same time the hole data is entered for a CNC Peddinghaus punch or drill line.

Ability to mult previously programmed beams into a multed condition to maximize the
material utilization when processing mill lengths. This feature pertains to beams that are to
be cut to length or cut to length and coped. Beams or columns that require weld prep must
be cut to length then run individually, as they cannot be run in a mult.

Dimensional input in feet inch fraction, inch decimal, or metric

It is our mutual goal to establish an effective and productive installation as soon as possible. Our
experience has shown that this task is best addressed by providing the initial training of your
programmer, operator and/or maintenance personnel prior to the installation. To accomplish this
task in advance of the Ocean Liberator delivery, it is necessary to send your appropriate staff to
Peddinghaus' plant facility in Bradley, Illinois for training. Our Service Staff can be contacted for
scheduling your visit to Peddinghaus' Bradley, Illinois campus.
