Lesson Plan in Earth Science 11/12

Sherlyn A. Dutosme
Valencia National High School
09051033875

Content Standards:
The learners demonstrate an understanding of the various sources of energy
(fossil fuels, geothermal, hydroelectric).
Performance Standards:
The learners shall be able to prepare a plan that the community may
implement to minimize waste when people utilize materials and resources
Learning Competency and Code:
The learners explain how heat from inside the Earth is tapped as a source of
energy (geothermal) for human use (S11ES-Ie-11)

Quarter: 1st Week: 5 Day: 1

I. Objectives:
At the end of 60 minutes, 100 % of the learners are expected to:
1. Explain how heat from inside the Earth is tapped as a source of energy
(geothermal) for human use
2. Make a flow chart how heat from inside the Earth is tapped as a source
of energy (geothermal) for human use
3. Recognize the importance of geothermal energy as a source of energy

II. Content:
Subject Matter: Energy Resources
Integration:
Tech-Voc (Cookery): Relating the idea of the process of foods underwent
steaming in harnessing energy.
Values Education: Cooperation and teamwork is needed in every group
activity.
HOPE: Enhancement of creativity and resourcefulness skills.
Strategies: Collaborative Learning, Inquiry-based,
Materials: As stated

School, Earth science. Quezon City, Philippines.
III. Learning Tasks:

ELICIT (Access prior knowledge) 5 Materials

Minutes

72
Ask the learners: “Are you hungry?
Provide pictures of foods that undergone the
process of steaming namely bread, puto,
kutsinta etc. Ask questions:
1. What do you think are common
characteristic/s of the following
pictures? http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-
2. Could you give more examples? https://c1.staticflickr.com/
3. What is the importance of heat to
these kinds foods?

ENGAGE (Get the students’ minds Materials

focused on the topic(short; question or
picture) 10 Minutes
Pose picture of a volcano and ask students
the following questions:
https://
1. Could the steam in the volcano can
cook the foods presented earlier?
2. Can we directly use it for cooking?
3. Where does steam from the volcano
come from? upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/Halema%CA%BBuma%CA
4. What is happening in the interior of %BBu_crater2.jpg

the earth?
5. Can we use the heat from the earth’s
interior a source or energy? How?

EXPLORE (Provide students with a Materials

common experience) 10 Minutes
The teacher will divide the class into 6 six Cut out information:
groups. Each group will be provided will be
 Geothermal energy (Earth’s heat)
provided with cut-outs of information
 Heat and electricity
placed in an envelope.
 Geothermal power station
1. Students will have to prepare a table  The water is heated by the earth. It goes
written in a manila paper as shown into a special turbine. The turbine blades

the table
c. They have to extract the key
words from the information in their
table in order to draw the flow chart
of how geothermal energy is tapped
as a source of energy.
EXPLAIN (Teach the concept. Should Materials
include interaction between teacher and
students ) 10 Minutes

74
Students will post their output on the board. Answer key:
Let them compare their answers to the other
group if they have the same answers before
presenting to them the correct answers.
Guide Questions:
1. What does a geothermal power
station use to make electricity?
2. How geothermal energy transformed
into electricity?
3. Is it a good source of alternative
energy? Why?

ELABORATE (Students apply the Materials

information learned in the Explain)
15_Minutes
A video clip will be shown to students to Video can be accessed through
deepen their understanding about the lesson. https://youtu.be/kjpp2MQffnw
A teacher made PowerPoint presentation
Hand-outs
will also be shown for group discussion.
EVALUATE (How will you know the Materials
students have learned the concept?)
5Minutes
I. Multiple Choice. Choose the
letter of the correct answer.

b. 900C-1600C
c. 1600C and above
d. 2000C and above
2. Geothermal reservoirs tend to be
depleted with use, some faster than
others. Their replenishment capacity
depends on:
a. Heat sources within the Earth’s
crust, mainly radioactivity and
residual heat.
b. Energy from outside the reservoir
(solar heat) for very low-temperature
applications using heat pumps.
c. The circulation of groundwater that

75
is reheated on contact with heat
sources located away from the
reservoir before returning to the
reservoir.
d. All of the above
3. “Geothermal” means:
a. “Geo” means “Fossil” and “Thermal”
means “Fuel”
b. “Geo” means “Plants” and “Thermal”
means “Oil”
c. “Geo” means “Earth” and “Thermal”
means “Heat”
d. “Geo” means “Oil” and “Thermal”
means “Drill”
4. Which of the following is TRUE
about geothermal power plant?
a. A geothermal power plant can be
successful almost anywhere.
b. The initial costs associated with
a geothermal power plant are
low.
c. There is no risk of the release of
hazardous substances during
drilling.
d. Geothermal energy is easy on the
local environment.
5. Which of the following country
located the world’s first geothermal
power plant?
