INTRODUCTION TO ELT METHODOLOGY

* MICROTEACHING TASK GUIDELINES

In groups, you will have to prepare and give a Primary English lesson to
your classmates. It should include the planning of a sequence of three
activities to be implemented in class. The maximum time for your session
is 30 minutes.

Please complete this lesson plan form and hand it in when you
give your class.

Lesson Plan Description


Time: 30 minutes
Title/Theme: Travelling to different cultures

Age of students: 11
Grade/English level: 6th Primary
Materials: Computer, Kahoot, Tablets, PowerPoint

Language objectives of the session:


 To acquire new vocabulary about cultures.
 To learn how to describe an image.
 To know the existence of different cultures.
 To learn the main characteristics of the different cultures.
 To learn how to synthesize information.
 To practice correct pronunciation.

Activity 1: Description of pictures

Firstly, the teacher will project different photos about distinct historical
cultures of the world on the digital board. From these photos, the teacher
will ask the students questions about what they see on the board.
The questions will be:

 What do you see in the image?


 In what country do you think this image is located?
 Is it a historical or current image?
 What do you think this image represents?
 What do you see them doing in the picture?

These will be the photos that we will comment during the session:

After asking questions about the image they see, the hi will give a little explanation about
each culture we talk about some instants. In the case of Roman culture I will explain the
second.
-That this is the Roman culture. This civilization originated in the 8th century B.C. and
expanded throughout much of Europe, North Africa and Asia minor.
-They were polytheists, they believed in more than one god: such as Zeus, Aphrodite,
Ares, etc.
-What you see in the image is a Roman theater, where three types of shows were offered:
gladiatorial fights and fights of wild beasts.
-to refer to the rulers of the Roman Empire they called themselves emperors.

The second image teaches a direct relationship to Egyptian culture, they will explain:
-The territory of Ancient Egypt consisted of the Delta and the Nile River Valley, a long and
narrow strip in northeast Africa.
-around the year 3150 B.C. Civilization was born and is given by finished in the year 31
B.C.
- The most famous that the Egyptians have are the pyramids and the pharaohs. Pharaoh
was the title given to the king in Ancient Egypt.

The third image appears Buddhism:


-Buddhism does not focus on the reverence or devotion of any god, but on the spiritual
development of each individual.
-believe in karma, rebirth, and spirituality.
-Buddhism originated in India between the 6th and 4th centuries BC. C., from where it
spread to much of East Asia.

The last image is about cowboys, we will talk about:


- They were cowboys, their origin was after the arrival of the Spanish to America in the
16th century.
-The conquerors brought their cattle traditions, as well as horses and domesticated cattle
and the cowboys took advantage of it.
-He is in charge of tasks related to livestock in much of the northern states of Mexico such
as Chihuahua, Baja California, Durango, Coahuila, etc.
-The boots are, along with the hat, the most characteristic article of the cowboy clothing in
the West

Target Language: Numbers, ages, countries


Skills: Communicative ability, participation and oral fluency.

Activity 2: Culture Kahoot, description, skills, target language

In this activity we will do a Kahoot about the different cultures that are explained
before. The teacher will create a Kahoot with questions to confirm the student’s
knowledge.

Target Language: Vocabulary related to cultures


Skills: Reading comprehension, participation

Activity 3: American natives, description, skills, target language


This session is focused to speak about Native American culture. This activity will
take place in the classroom and this will be divided into two parts.

The first part will consist of a presentation very similar to the first session, where
the teacher will project a presentation on the digital board with several
photographs. The first part consists of observing what the students know about this
culture through a conversation between everyone (students and teacher). The
teacher will guide this conversation through a series of questions such as:

 What do you see on the board?


 Where are the Indians from? Only from the US?
 What do you know about Native Americans?
 Where did they live?
 How did they communicate?
 What was your lifestyle like?

The second part will consist of an escape room which will have to fill in some
sentences with the right words.
The sentences that they will have to complete are:

1)The Indians communicated by means of drums and signs of _______.


2)Toro Sentado, Caballo Loco and Nube Roja were very famous _______.
3)The vast majority of Native Americans lived in _____ _______.
4)Native Americans did not live in a fixed place and were ______.
The words they have to find area:
1) Smoke
2) Indians
3) United States
4) Nomads

After finding the words, they will be given a card with each letter of the alphabet
together with its numerical value.
The students will have to find what the number is and when they have all the
numbers in the word add them to obtain a part of a sentence.

Finally when they have all the parts of the sentence they will have to construct it so
that they form the final sentence correctly.

Target Language: Correct pronunciation


Skills: Reading comprehension, active listening and learn to learn.
