a) Technology refers to the use of tools, machines, materials, techniques and sources of power
to make work easier and more productive. While science is concerned with understanding
how and why things happen, technology deals with making things happen.
Development is closely related with technology. The radical change and advancement in the economy,
as we observe today, is the result of the modern technology.
Technology has brought about efficiency and quality in the manufacturing sectors.
Technological advancement has reduced the risk involved in manufacturing enterprises. There has
been tremendous improvement in the field of health worldwide. Not only the average age of people
has increased but the mortality rate has also reduced considerably. This could be possible only because
of technological advancement in health sectors. There is perhaps no field of human life which has not
been affected by technology. Agriculture, industry, profession, health, education, art, recreation,
religious activities and daily life activities all are under the influence of technology.
But it is important to keep in mind that technological advancement has affected human life
both positively as well as negatively. Not only that life has become easy and comfortable, there are
also indications of several threats to life and society in the future due to over-use/misuse of modern
technology.
The sustainability of development is in question today. This has happened only due to
irrational use of technology. The positive as well as negative roles of technology have put humans into
to a situation of flux and confusion.
______
b) Democracy means a system of government in which all the people of a country can vote to
elect their representatives. Media came into existence in 1780 with the introduction of a
newspaper namely ‘The Bengal Gazette’ and since then it has matured leaps and bounds. It
has been playing a very important role in shaping a healthy democracy. It is the backbone
of a democracy. Media makes us aware of various social, political and economic activities
happening around the world. It is like a mirror, which shows us or strives to show us the
bare truth and harsh realities of life.
The media has undoubtedly evolved and become more active over the year. The impact of
media really noteworthy. Excessive coverage or hype of sensitive news has led to communal
riots at times. The illiterates are more prone to provocations than the literates. There is a
plethora of such negative impacts. Media should take utmost care in airing or publishing such
sensational news.
Commercialization has created a stiff competition in media. In order to outdo each other print
media has often gone one step further in publishing articles, cover stories, etc. on sex. Media
experts say this is one of the means of attracting readers who are glued to T.V. news channels,
which you have cropped up swiftly in a recent past and thy believe this is a cheap form of
journalism.
No one is perfect in this world so is the media. There is still a lot of scope for improvement by
which media can raise up to the aspirations of the people for which it is meant. We cannot
think of a democracy without active and neutral role of media. Media is like a watchdog in a
democracy that keeps government active.
____
c) Empowerment can be defined as a multi-dimensional social process that helps people gain
control over their lives. Women’s empowerment is the processes of maintaining the
benefits of women at an individual, household, community and broader levels. It involves
the action of boosting the status of women through literacy, education, training and rising
awareness. Hence, women’s empowerment is all about allowing and equipping women to
make life-determining choices across different issues in the country.
We all know the ratio of girls is less as compared to boys in our country, India. And it is due to
the orthodox mentality of society who wants to have boys and not girls. In true sense,
patriarchy has decided the course of women’s lives throughout ages. The need for women
empowerment arose because of the gender discrimination and male domination in the Indian
society since ancient time. Women are being suppressed by their family members and society
for many reasons. They have been targeted for many types of violence and discriminatory
practices by the male members of the family and society in India. Wrong and old practices in
the society from ancient times continued the form of well-developed customs and traditions.
