The objective of the project is to get a better
understanding of the life of elderly people. It is
essential for us to be aware of the various experiences
people go through during their old age and how that
affects their loved ones. This project serves the above
mentioned purpose.

In this ever-growing world where
people are born and people die, pass
through different age groups
throughout their lives. Just after
birth they enter the infancy age
group. Then comes the early childhood
which is accompanied by late
childhood, pre-teen, late teen,
adulthood and the final stage of life,
the ‘OLD AGE’ which is our main agenda
of this essay. Old age is an age when
people suffer with a drastic change in
their body state. The old age is an
integral part of human life. It is the
evening of life. It is unavoidable,
undesirable, unwelcome and problem-
ridden phase of life. But it is really
interesting to note that everybody
wants to live a long life, but not to
be old. It is ironical that however
undesirable the old age, it is bound
7|P ag e
to come in life. A man is compelled to
go through the pains and pleasures of
this age like the other phases of life
before making an exit from this mortal
world.
Their stamina and strength reduce,
their body posture deforms, their skin
loosens and turns pale and with the
increasing number of years of their
life, more and more diseases take over
their body. Old age is a bracket of
people who are 65 years old or more.
According to the census of 2011, 8.9 %
of Indian population was elderly
people which is projected to be 10.1 %
and 13.1 % in 2031. Due to decrease in
death rates of elderly people we can
see a population rise of 41% in 2011-
2021 time period. When we talk about
their proportion in the world
population, from 1990-2019 time
period, there is an increase from 6%
to 9% and is projected to increase to
a total of 16% by 2050 which means
every 1 of 6 people will be an elderly
person.

Old age is an age when people retire,
settle and enjoy the outcome of hard
work of their entire life. It has many
advantages such as no work, a lot of
free time for their hobbies and
family, plentiful of experience,
senior discounts and relaxation. But
when there are pros, we find cons as
well. Being old is sometimes tough
because one cannot physically move
well, suffer through various diseases
such as diabetes, asthma, Alzheimer's
disease, cataract etc., lack of social
support, lack of services, poor
literacy and numeracy skills, fear of
their area after dark and last but not
the least ‘the fear of death’ also
known as ‘Thanatophobia’.
As we talk about Thanatophobia, Fear
of the inevitable. Death, it surrounds
us, it could be waiting for us at any
corner (whether it be a car swerving
out of control, an acute allergic
reaction, a nasty slip-on ice or too
much stress...). We tend to try not
thinking about it too much, but it's
something inevitable, something we all

eventually come to. I believe that
pretty much everyone dreads it in one
way or another. I also believe that
this fear usually arises from the fear
of the unknown. It is quite popular
among people of old age and more among
their ‘well-wishers’.
No one wants to lose their close ones,
especially the ones with whom we made
very special memories. Their well-
wishers suffer from depression,
tension, despair thoughts,
restlessness, regret of not spending
time with them properly, and fear of
losing their close ones. Not only the
close ones are affected by old age but
also ‘old age has a lot of impacts on
elder people’
Every phase of life has its own
problems which require prudence,
wisdom, courage and strength to attend
to. In childhood and youth, one has
parents and other close elderly kith
and kin to help, cooperate and guide.
Besides, one himself is full of
energy, strength, stamina and courage.

But the situation takes a reverse turn
in the
old age. For his every work he needs
someone to help. He becomes dependent
to others largely due to his physical
infirmity. He is, in fact, filled with
a feeling of emotional insecurity. He
wants someone to take care of his
needs and share his feelings. But in
this materialist society, everybody is
short of time. Nobody has enough time
for him. Even his own children, to
whom he dedicates his life and his
earnings, do not find time for him.
There is evidence that some natural
body changes associated with aging may
increase a person’s risk of
experiencing depression. Recent
studies suggest that lower
concentrations of folate in the blood
and nervous system may contribute to
depression, mental impairment, and
dementia.
Depression is something that makes
their life worse, as they don’t have
such work to do, they are often left
11 | P a g e
into seas of thoughts. Sometimes their
happy moments, sometimes moments of
despair, sometimes harsh realities and
sometimes depression. This depression
sometimes causes ‘irritation in their
behavior’
When we think of old age people there
also comes a though of conservatism.
Not everyone but many elder people
have problems with changes that are
occurring around and related to them.
They want to keep things slow and
according to them which might not be
correct sometimes and lead to a
different outcome than expected.
Well about ‘expectations in the old
age’ there are not much expectations
from them other than living more from
them. But the expectations they hold
are a lot.
They have expectations from people of
each and every age groups keeping in
mind their experiences and mistakes,
like to pre-teens they expect them to
play a lot for their health
development, to teens they expect them
12 | P a g e
to study a lot to make their life
easier in later phases, from adults to
maintain between their ‘social and
personal life.’
Old age is an age when elder people
get socially open with other elderly
people. Sit under the sun chitchatting
with each other sharing their stories
of bravery and accomplishments. They
not only recite their stories to
fellow elder people but also to their
grand-children.
As death is inevitable, one should
enjoy his moments of life to the
fullest no matter how old he is.
Elder people should focus more on
their health by exercising and doing
yoga because it helps then live a
healthier life. And their healthy life
not only makes them happy but also
their well-wishers.
