Fashion Design & Merchandising Final Project

Purpose: This project is intended to provide the students an opportunity to demonstrate fashion
design skills necessary to communicate an idea and describe a garment concept.

Project Summary: Students will prepare 3 original fashion illustrations or sketches to be contained in a
collection or line of apparel suitable to the specialization and price range of a design house or apparel
manufacturing firm. The student will give an oral presentation of 3 minutes in length. Following the
presentation the student will be asked questions for up to 2 minutes by the teacher. Two copies of a
typed information sheet in outline form and a typed cost breakdown sheet are required.

Project Requirements: The project must include a mat presentation color board with the following:

1. Title of the Project (The title can be the name of the line or creative designation of the
project)

2. Three (3) original, either hand drawn or traced, fashion illustrations or sketches of apparel to
be contained in a line or collection suitable to the specialization and price range of a design
house or manufacturing firm. Note: Although not required, the presentation may also include
illustrations of the back view for each style.

3. Labeled samples of all fabrics used.

4. Labeled samples of all buttons and trims used.

5. The presentation board must not be larger than 24” X 36”.

6. The student will prepare a typed information sheet in outline form and in the
formal/sequence listed and submit (2) copies of the information sheet to the teacher at the
beginning of the presentation. The information sheet must include the following:

a. Category – divisions of apparel Price


Range – market best suited for Theme –
collection focus Colors – options
for each style Size Ranges – sized to
be offered Season – selling time period

b. A list of the following elements and principles of design and an explanation of how each is
used in the students’ illustrations:

7. The student will prepare a typed cost breakdown sheet and submit (2) copies of the cost
breakdown sheet to the teacher. The item and source, quantity or yards, unit price and total
of the following items as used, must be included in the cost breakdown sheet:

a. Materials – fabrics and linings

b. Notions - thread, zippers, pads, seam tape, snaps, etc.

c. Trimmings – lace, buttons, belts, buckles, beads, ribbon, embellishments, etc.

Example for Color Board:

Fabric: Chantilly Lace Trimmings: Bright Pink Satin Ribbon Notion: White Lightweight zipper

8. The student shall announce the title of the project at the beginning of the presentation thus
signaling the start of the timed oral presentation.

9. The student may use note cards while speaking.
