A RESEARCH PROPOSAL ABOUT FARMERS AND MARKET MANAGEMENT UNDER
AGRICULTURAL SECTOR IN UGANDA

TOPIC: A WEB-BASED FARMERS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.

E-MARKETS SYSTEM

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

A web-based farmer’s management system is an electronic trading platform also known as an

online trading platform, is a computer software program that can be used to control market
activities such as transactions between sellers and buyers via the instrumentality of computers.
This system will basically be designed to manage some of the farmer’s markets in Kampala city
and will help in the smooth running of many market activities such as pricing, buying and selling
of goods via internet

Farmers market is an agricultural market where a group of farmers gathers in single location to
sell off their farm products in form of food to public. Farmers market considered under
agricultural sector is acting as the source of different food staffs in all areas of Uganda and most
especially those that are industrialized. Farmers market is a vibrant and dynamic sector that plays
a crutial role in country’s economy provides livelihoods for a significant portion of the
population and contributes to food supply and earnings. In terms of local food systems, a lot of
research for example (GRIFFIN and FRONGILLO,2003, MYERS, 2021;) have explained the
roles of farmers markets in revitalizing local communities with farms through farmers who earns
between 40-70% for their products at farmer’s markets than when selling their produce to whole
sellers and maintaining between consumers and producers.

Currently Uganda is one of the least developed countries as a result of poor technology that is
being improvised in most of its sectors and therefore lack of this technology has undermined the
performance of small holder farms thus reducing their productivity where they end up not
investing in the necessary technology as well as machinery .Small holder farmers are being
encouraged to embrace digital marketing and innovation in their marketing processes to enable
online pricing ,financing and more of the market activities and boost radical changes in farm
markets for strong connection of farmers countrywide.

Research carried out on 9th Jan 2024 reports a good number of markets which are 122 in number
and are operating today where both smaller holder farmers and large scale producers are able to
access market services.

Statement off the problem

However, consumers or buyers and traders today are facing a problem of Price fluctuations on
different items which include meat, beans, irises, tomatoes, onion, and matooke which has
reduced consumption levels and also low incomes on the side of sellers in these markets, I
personally as a consumer have suffered the same problem. For example, rice has no standard
price in both wholesalers and retail traders which has brought confusion among the consumers.
This problem was identified from kale we market located on Gayaza road adjacent the Northern
By-pass about 5km from Kampala city in kawempe division and Nakasero market in Nakasero.

According to the research carried out in 2022 by Makerere university shows that various factors
have been causing price fluctuations and this has continued to insist even up to date which is
hindering Uganda’s economic development as well as people’s livelihoods.

However, in this course I have decided to come up with an idea of E-market management system
that can help to monitor different activities like pricing items, date of supply for particular items,
updating producers on when to supply, paying taxes for the goods, and making orders for supply
by consumers in these markets. The system will include, databases for the commodities sold in
the markets, standard prices, date supply from farmers, and will contain a notification tabs to
always notify both producers and market traders about price changes. This will help to create
awareness among producer’s traders and consumers about the prices thus leading to the smooth
running of market activities
In this research I will use different Methods for data collection which will include; observation
method and interviewing method. These will be used to make sure that the information contains
all the necessary details. I will also use both primary and secondary data sources for example
secondary data sources will include newspapers, google chrome, magazines, news from TVs and
other social media platforms.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

a) Uganda is considered to be one the highest producing countries in crop production, why
is it that farmer’s markets are not performing well with different commodity prices?
b) Is there any information system being used for monitoring market activities in kalerwe
market? If yes; what improvements can be done to improve on its performance?
c) What are people’s expectations about the information system that is going to be
developed, are they willing to adopt to the changes that it will come up with?

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

Specific objective of the study

The main objective of this study is to eliminate price fluctuations through developing a web-
based farmers market management system that will always contain data about commodity prices
and gives information to traders, suppliers (farmers)and buyers so that they are all satisfied in
terms of incomes and consumption.

General objectives include;’

 To identify the number of cases reported per year about price fluctuation in these specific
markets and on which commodities
 To find out which commodities are highly consumed than the other.
 To identify the supply chain of particular commodities in kalerwe market
 To identify commodities whose prices are ever changing and find out solutions.
 To sensitize people about proper use of mobile phones to manage their activities
especially in markets and get more skills about trending technology

CHAPTER TWO
Literature review:

Introduction

A web-based market management system (E-markets) is an internet based system used to

promote trading services via mobile phones and computer devices. Electronic markets can also
be termed as digital markets, online markets, it not only includes marketing on the internet but
also include marketing via emails and wireless media. It can help connect businesses to their
customers. Like any other media channels, E-markets is also part of Integrated Marketing
Communications (IMC) which can help a brand grow across different channels. This system can
reach out t several customers through different channels which include smartphones, tablets,
smart TV’S and laptops to run businesses through buying and selling of goods.

Several types of electronic markets include;

Article market

Blogging

Email market /newsletters

Webinars and video marketing.

Theory of electronic marketing

According to ‘Sheilesh’, In early 1990, the term digital marketing was first used, in that
particular year, ‘Archie’ first search engine was launched. In1994, there was the launch of
yahoo and first e-commerce transaction over net market. In terms of digital marketing, the year
2000 was significant. Dotcom’s introduction caused a number of internet firms to fold. Google
launched AdWords a tool that allows advertisers to promote their goods, social media was
developed later, Facebook and google were also made available to the general public. When
YouTube was introduced, marketer could now promote their brands.

Nowadays, digital marketing is getting more and more common but Marconi’s development of
radio marked the beginning of evolution. Some claim that the introduction of email marked its
beginning. Today digital marketing or electronic marketing is highly used due to its high level of
customer satisfaction across the country

CHAPTER THREE

Methodology

During this research, different methodologies will be used in order to get clear information for
example I will use both qualitative and quantitative research such that values are achieved, data
sources which will include both primary and secondary data sources; I will also use three
methods of data collection which will include; observation method, interviewing method and
questionnaires to get more accurate information.

Tools to be used will include; pens and papers that I will use while observing the situation in the
market, cameras on smart phone, recorders will be used to correct the information from
respondents while using interviewing method. All these tools will help to get clear and accurate
information that is reliable information that will enable me to develop a well-designed system
with user’s requirement.

The application of the case study analysis, a case study survey that will be approached using
Kalelwe market where buyers and sellers will be research participants, within the criteria that
occurred in the last four months where the price of onions had risen and most of consumers
could not afford buying them. Another scenario is about sugar prices that occurred in 2023 that
destabilized the status of markets in Kampala city as well as consumers The other participant
will come from institutions and universities like maker ere, kyambogo especially those that have
ever carried out market research Furthermore, the case study will determine the extent to which
electronic marketing systems are affecting the social-economic development of Uganda
especially in the urban areas of Uganda since it commonly used in these areas compared to rural
ones. The case study will also determine the exact commodities that have severely suffered high
price fluctuations such that we can find the way-out.

During this research, different methodologies will be used in order to get clear information for
example I will use both qualitative and quantitative research such that values are achieved, data
sources which will include both primary and secondary data sources

Primary data sources: These are direct description of any occurrence by an individual who
actually observed or witnessed the occurrence. In this I will use students from Maker ere and
traders in the market

Secondary data sources: these include publications or written materials by authors who are not
the direct observers or participants in the event happened. During my research I will use papers,
in form of questionnaires, and newspapers,

DATA COLLECTION METHODS

Sampling; Sampling is the selection of a subset of the population of interest in a research study.
In the vast majority of research endeavors, the participation of an entire population of interest is
not possible, so a smaller group is relied upon for data collection. During research, I will choose
Nakasero and the sample size of the population will be a population of 50 people to represent the
rest. This will enable me to get the information necessary.

Questionnaires; Research tool featuring a series of questions used to collect useful information
from respondents. These instruments will include oral questions and comprise an interview-style
format. I will also use questionnaires to collect information from a sampled population using the
study questions as mentioned above, this will enable me to get relevant information about the
case study.

Observation; This is where a researcher or participants go to a certain place to watch and

examine what is happening in that setting and document what they see. This qualitative method
is referred to as observation. I will also use this method to come with clear information.
RESEARCH DESIGN

A research design is a strategy for answering your research question using empirical data. It
includes research methodologies, tools, and techniques to conduct the research. For example, I
will use tools like papers, pens, cameras, recorders, audios, and computers.

Descriptive design; In a descriptive research design, the researcher can choose to be either a
complete observer, an observer as a participant, a participant as an observer, or a full participant.
For example, in a supermarket, a researcher can from afar monitor and track the customers'
selection and purchasing trends.

Correlational design; A correlational research design investigates relationships between

variables without the researcher controlling or manipulating any of them. A correlation reflects
the strength and/or direction of the relationship between two (or more) variables. The direction
of a correlation can be either positive or negative.

Experimental; Experimental design means planning a set of procedures to investigate a

relationship between variables. To design a controlled experiment, you need: A testable
hypothesis

CONCLUSION

Data or information will be gathered using different tools and method which will help to
compare data from different sources to come up with the final solution and I hope that the
information will be relevant to the current situation in terms of technology and information
systems.
