TECH SPECS SECURE DRILLING SERVICES | ROTATING CONTROL DEVICES

Model 9000 Rotating Control

Device
Safely contains and diverts annular fluids during drilling
operations

Applications
• Managed pressure drilling, air drilling, and underbalanced drilling
operations
• Extended-reach horizontal wells and vertical wells that require large-
diameter drillstrings
• Drilling operations that require preventing background gas from flashing
to the atmosphere on the rig floor
• Drilling in shallow-gas formations
• Drilling in formations with abnormally pressured aquifers
Features and Benefits
• The Model 9000 rotating control device (RCD) diverts well effluent away
from the rig floor for safer, more efficient drilling.
• A 9-in. bore through the bearing assembly provides operation with a
larger-diameter drillpipe in cases of extended-reach drilling (ERD) and
ultradeep wells.
• The design and proprietary elastomeric composition of the sealing
elements ensure sealing capability, which improves durability and
reduces costs.
• A casing-stripper rubber used to strip casing in the well is made of
heavy-duty natural rubber and available for any size casing up to Part of the SafeShield onshore series of
13-3/8 in. The rubber uses a quick-lock clamp to seal tightly against the RCDs, the Model 9000 RCD has features that
bowl gasket and divert mud and gas through the flowline outlet for make it well suited for ERD operations.
enhanced personnel safety.
• A drilling nipple used to trip without a bearing assembly seals tightly
against the bowl gasket with a quick-lock clamp, helps to contain drilling
mud while tripping, and can be extended or cut to the desired length.
Tool Description
The Weatherford Model 9000 RCD, part of the Weatherford SafeShield®
series of onshore RCDs, is used with annular and ram blowout preventers
(BOPs) to safely contain and divert annular fluids during drilling
operations. When mounted to the top of a surface BOP stack, the Model
9000 RCD creates a secure seal around the rotating drillpipe and tool
joints to positively divert annular returns. The Model 9000 RCD diverts
mud and cuttings through a dedicated choke manifold to the separation
equipment. This enables use of various drilling techniques, such as
managed pressure drilling, underbalanced drilling, and air drilling. As a
result of this diversion process, the Model 9000 RCD enhances health,
safety, and environmental (HSE) performance during Secure Drilling
operations. The rugged body of the Model 9000 RCD consists of the bowl
and the latch assembly. This system includes an oil lubricator, which
operates from the air supply for the rig to deliver constant flow of filtered
oil to bearings and seals.

Parts and Accessories

• A mount can be welded onto various casing sizes and supplied with or without a flowline.
• Assembly adapter rings are used around the bearing assembly to fit into larger casing sizes.
• Kelly drivers come with each RCD and fit all kelly sizes and shapes. Steel or polyurethane inserts are available.
• A starting mandrel supports safe and easy drillstring stabbing through stripper rubbers.
• Sealing elements are provided in either natural rubber or oil-resistant polyurethane. Both types include heavy-duty
stripper rubbers, and the type needed depends on operating parameters.
• Flowing flanges connect the flowline to the RCD.

Dynamic pressure* 500 psi (3.45 MPa)

Static pressure* 500 psi (3.45 MPa)
Maximum speed limit 200 rpm
Bearing assembly inside diameter 9 in. (228.6 mm)
* Pressure tests to verify the static and dynamic pressure capability of the Model
9000 RCD are performed in a controlled environment. Actual field application
pressure capabilities will depend on several factors, such as the type, size, and
condition of the sealing element; the type, size, and condition of the drillpipe; and
the drilling fluid temperature. Because of the uncontrolled nature of the
environment and well conditions during drilling operations, Weatherford makes no
representation or warranty on the operation of the RCD outside of the pressure
ratings as set forth herein.
