Evaluate the relevance of incremental and radical innovations to

organisations in industry and commerce in Zimbabwe.

Incremental and radical innovations are highly relevant to organizations in
industry and commerce in Zimbabwe, as they can drive growth,
competitiveness, and sustainability. Incremental innovation refers to the process
of making small, incremental changes to an existing product, service, or process
to improve its performance, quality, or efficiency. It involves building on
existing knowledge and capabilities to create a slightly better version of
something that already exists. Whereas, Radical innovations are ground
breaking, revolutionary, and disruptive changes that create new markets,
business models, or industries. They involve a significant departure from
existing knowledge and capabilities, and often require a fundamental shift in
thinking, behavior, and culture. Companies that benefited from incremental and
radical innovation in Zimbabwe include Standard Chartered (Stanchart):
Introduced the first ATM in 1996, CABS rolled out point-of-sale machines
countrywide, leading to widespread acceptance of the debit card as a means of
payment, NetOne introduced mobile wallets, enabling non-banking customers to
pay each other using mobile phones and Econet offered a more effective market
offering running on a more dynamic platform making ecocash a successful
example of disruptive innovation. So we are going to discuss common benefits
of both incremental and radical innovations below.
First and foremost, Improved competitiveness and market position is a
significant benefit of incremental and radical innovation in industry for
Zimbabwe. Innovations help companies differentiate themselves from
competitors, making them more attractive to customers and increasing their
market share. Incremental innovations can lead to cost reductions, process
improvements, and increased productivity, making companies more
competitive. Radical innovations can create new markets, industries, or business
models, providing first-mover advantages and new revenue streams. For
example Econet Wireless Zimbabwe. Econet, a leading telecom company in
Zimbabwe, has embraced both incremental and radical innovations to improve
its competitiveness and market position. Econet introduced a mobile banking
service, EcoCash, which allowed customers to make transactions, pay bills, and
transfer money using their mobile phones. This innovation improved the
existing mobile banking service, making it more efficient and user-friendly.
Also, Econet launched a new digital platform, Kwese, which offers a range of
digital services including video streaming, online shopping, and digital
payments. This radical innovation disrupted the traditional telecom business
model, positioning Econet as a leader in the digital space.
Secondly, Increased revenue and profitability. Innovations can lead to increased
revenue through new products, services, and business models. In extension to
that, Innovations can improve profitability through cost reductions, process
improvements, and increased efficiency. It enhanced customer satisfaction ,
incremental innovations can improve product features, functionality, and user
experience, leading to increased customer loyalty and retention, and ultimately,
increased revenue. Then, radical innovations can create new products, services,
or business models, generating new revenue streams and increasing
profitability. For instance, Delta Beverages' introduction of new products, such
as the Chibuku Super beer, which has increased revenue and profitability
through increased sales.
Thirdly, Increased economic growth and development is a significant benefit of
incremental and radical innovation in industry for Zimbabwe, for instance.
Dairibord, a leading dairy company in Zimbabwe, has embraced both
incremental and radical innovations to drive economic growth and development.
Thus, Dairibord introduced a new yogurt product, "Dairibord Yogurt", which
has become a market leader in the yogurt category. This incremental innovation
improved the existing product line, making it more competitive and attractive to
customers. Also, Dairibord launched a new subsidiary, "Dairibord Logistics",
which provides logistics and transportation services to the dairy industry. This
radical innovation created a new revenue stream and improved the company's
supply chain management. Dairibord Holdings Limited's incremental and
radical innovations have contributed to increased economic growth and
development in Zimbabwe, creating new jobs, improving the quality of life, and
increasing competitiveness and efficiency.
Next to that, ZPC, a power generation company, has embraced both incremental
and radical innovations to better utilize resources and improve efficiency. ZPC
introduced a predictive maintenance program, using data analytics and machine
learning to predict equipment failures and schedule maintenance. This
incremental innovation improved the existing maintenance process, reducing
downtime and increasing efficiency. ZPC also partnered with a local startup ,
EcoCycle, to launch a waste-to-energy project, generating electricity from waste
and reducing landfill waste. This radical innovation created a new market and
revenue stream, and has contributed to the growth of the renewable energy
sector in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe Power Company's have led to better utilization
of resources, increased efficiency, environmental sustainability, and new
revenue streams, contributing to the growth and development of the energy
sector in Zimbabwe.
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe's incremental and radical innovations have created
new employment opportunities, contributing to improved quality of life for
many Zimbabweans. Econet, a leading telecom company in Zimbabwe,
introduced a new customer service platform, improving the existing customer
service process and creating new jobs for customer service representatives.
Econet also launched a new data analytics department, creating new jobs for
data analysts and scientists. This was an incremental innovation key. Econet
also partnered with a local startup, Vaya, to launch a ride-hailing service,
creating new jobs for drivers and customer support agents. Radically it
benefited zim economically and socially.
On the other hand , It is important to note that both incremental and radical
innovations are essential for growth and progress, and companies should strive
to find a balance between the two. Additionally, the government and regulatory
bodies can play a crucial role in creating an enabling environment for
innovation to thrive in Zimbabwe. Radical innovations come with a high risk of
failure, which can be costly and damaging to a company’s reputation. Also,
Incremental innovations may not lead to significant growth or change, as they
build on existing products or processes. Thus, A local textile company
introduces a new fabric design, which is an incremental innovation. While it
may attract some new customers, it is unlikely to revolutionize the industry. In
additional to that, A Zimbabwean bank launches a mobile banking app, which is
an incremental innovation. While it improves customer experience, it may not
be enough to compete with fintech startups offering radical innovations.

In conclusion, both incremental and radical innovations have the potential to

significantly impact industries in Zimbabwe. Incremental innovations, which
involve gradual improvements to existing products or processes, can lead to
increased efficiency and productivity, while radical innovations, which involve
groundbreaking new products or processes, can disrupt entire industries and
create new markets. While incremental innovations are more common and
easier to implement, radical innovations have the potential for much greater
impact, but also come with greater risk. To fully harness the potential of
innovation, industries in Zimbabwe should strive to create a culture that
encourages and supports both incremental and radical innovation, and provides
the necessary resources and support for entrepreneurs and innovators to bring
their ideas to life.
