Worksheet 6.1
Reflection in a plane mirror
In this activity, you will draw ray diagrams.
1 Complete these ray diagrams. Label the diagrams as completely as you can.

CAMBRIDGE LOWER SECONDARY SCIENCE 8 UNIT 6: LIGHT
2 Draw a labelled ray diagram to show a ray of light being reflected from the surface
of this plane mirror. Make your drawing as accurate as possible.

Worksheet 6.2
Refraction in water and glass
In this activity, you will draw ray diagrams to show how light is refracted.
1 Draw a labelled ray diagram to show how light is refracted passing from air into water.

CAMBRIDGE LOWER SECONDARY SCIENCE 8 UNIT 6: LIGHT
2 Draw a labelled ray diagram to show how light passes from air into a block of glass.
Continue the ray diagram to show how the ray of light comes back out of the glass into the air.

Worksheet 6.2
Refraction in water and glass
Extension
3 Try drawing, on a separate sheet of paper, an accurate ray diagram for refraction at a water surface,
using these angles:
• angle of incidence = 55°
• angle of refraction = 38°
When an incident ray arrives at a water surface, not all of the light passes into the water.
Some of the light is reflected from the water surface. This is called partial reflection.
Try drawing a light ray to show this partial reflection on your diagram.
Label it ‘partially reflected ray’.
4 Try drawing, on a separate sheet of paper, an accurate ray diagram using these angles.
For the light ray passing from air into glass:
• angle of incidence from air = 45°
• angle of refraction in glass = 27°
Refraction of light passing from glass into air is equal and opposite to that of light
passing from air into glass.
For the light ray that is in the glass block:
a state the angle of incidence from the glass
b state the angle of refraction in air.
Use the space below to sketch your ideas first.
