TRANSFORMATIONS OF FUNCTIONS

Assume the original function to be y = f(x) for all of the following transformations.

Operation Effect on the graph of y=f(x) Example

y y=x2+2

y = f(x) + c vertical shift y=x2

Add a positive constant to f(x) c units upward

y=x2
y

y=x2‐2
y = f(x) ‐ c vertical shift
Subtract a positive constant from f(x) c units downward
x

y=x2 y y=(x‐2)2
y = f(x‐c) horizontal shift
Replace x by x‐c, where c is a positive c units to the right
constant x

y=(x+2)2 y y=x2
y = f(x+c) horizontal shift
Replace x by x+c, where c is a positive c units to the left
constant
x

y
y=x2

y = ‐f(x) relection about the x‐axis

Multiply f(x) by ‐1 x

y= ‐x2

y
y=2‐x y=2x
y = f(‐x) relection about the y‐axis
Replace x by ‐x
x

y=sin(x)

y = c f(x) vertical stretch, for c > 1 y=0.5sin(x)

Multiply f(x) by a positive constant vertical shrink, for 0 < c < 1
y=2sin(x)

y=sin(0.5x)
y = f(cx)
Replace x by cx, where c is a positive horizontal shrink, for c > 1
constant horizontal stretch, for 0 < c < 1
y=sin(2x)
y=sin(x)
