Group B Topic 2 Topic 3 Topic 1
Group C Topic 3 Topic 1 Topic 2
The report of this practical work (of all 3 topics) is to be done in pairs and uploaded on Moodle.
Topic 1: Belt drive: pillar drill
The following is a diagram of a transmission of movement by stepped pulleys-belts, of a drill press
spindle (available in the fab lab). The actual drill might be different from the one depicted in this
diagram.
The motor controls the rotation of the drill spindle using the stepped pulley system with a belt. The 2
stepped pulleys are identical and their mounting direction on the motor axis and the spindle axis is
inverted. The spindle rotation speed is adjusted by placing the belt on the desired step. We thus
obtain different transmission ratios: with r = (∅spindle /∅Motor).
To make 9,5 mm diameter holes in a steel flange with a drill bit attached to the spindle, the position of
the belt is set to the fourth step (counting from the top).
1. Verify the diameters (∅) of the pulleys in the system.
2. Calculate the transmission ratio of the step, r4 = (∅spindle /∅Motor).
3. Measure Nspindle with a tachometer to obtain a precise rotational speed. If it is not possible to
make this measurement, use the indicated speed in the diagram.
4. Calculate the rotational speed of the motor, NMotor in rpm.
5. Calculate the cutting speed of the drill bit, VF in m/min (linear speed in m/min of a point
located on the periphery of the drill bit).

6. Place the belt on step 2 (from top to bottom), then calculate the transmission ratio
r1 = (∅spindle /∅Motor).
7. Assuming the rotational speed of the motor is the same as question 4, calculate the spindle
rotation speed N1 in rpm. Verify with the tachometer, if possible, or with the indicated speed in
the diagram.
8. Calculate the maximum cutting speed VF of a drill bit. To do this:
a. Measure the diameter of a drill bit using a caliper. If it is not possible to take the
measurement, use D = 9,5 mm.
b. On which step should the belt be placed to obtain the maximum spindle rotation
speed, Nmax? Calculate the transmission ratio for this condition rMax_speed = (∅spindle /∅Motor),
then the maximum rotation speed of the drill spindle NMax in rpm (using the same
motor speed as before).
c. Calculate the maximum cutting speed of the 9,5 mm diameter drill, VF in m/min.
Topic 2: Chain drive: bicycle
- Use a bicycle with several sprockets and chainrings.
- Measure the number of teeth in the sprocket corresponding to 5th gear (we will call it Z1). Do
the same for the one corresponding to 2nd gear (it will be called Z2).
- Measure the diameter of the rear wheel. If it is not possible, use Z 1 = 16 and Z2 = 42 and wheel
diameter = 700 mm for question 1, and Z1 = 14 and Z2 = 50 for question 2.
Problem:
Suppose that the bike is travelling in a straight line on a horizontal road.
1. If I want to ride the bike at a linear speed of 20 km/h, how fast should I pedal in revolutions per
minute? At this point, the setting is on the 2nd chainring and the 5th sprocket.
2. With this bike, what is the maximum speed I can reach while maintaining the same pedaling
speed?
Topic 3
Topic 3 is divided into two separate studies, one on gear transmission and the other on the study of
bearings.
Topic 3.1: Gear transmission: winch
Questions:
1) Turn the crank. How many turns of the pinion
(NP) are required for the wheel to make one turn
(NW)? Deduce the transmission ratio of the
winch: rtrans = NP / NW .
2) Determine the number of teeth ZW of the wheel
and the number of teeth ZP of the pinion.
3) What relationship can be established between
the quantities rtrans,, ZW and ZP?

TP o1.2 Power Transmission Technology
4) Determine the reversibility of the system. Experimentally test it.
5) Determine the module m of the wheel and the pinion. The module is a standardized
characteristic, so it must be selected from a list.
6) Conclude on the value of the module.
Topic 3.2: Bearing mounting and assembly
- Demo model with bearings (do not manipulate the models, only observe the installation of the
bearings).
The following systems are being studied:

The bearings are in yellow on the video.

The bearings are blue-purple on the video.

General questions (from the videos):
1) Present the composition of a bearing.
2) What mechanical connection (between a shaft and its bore) can exist in a bearing?
3) For each system, specify whether it is a rotating-shaft or a rotating-bore mounting? Explain
the difference.
4) How are the inner and outer rings of the bearings stopped axially? Make a summary diagram.
What is the advantage of fixing these rings?
3/4
TP o1.2 Power Transmission Technology
If you are analyzing the demo models with bearings:
5) What is the type of bearing?
6) Is it a rotating shaft or rotary bore mounting?
7) Are the inner rings mounted with clearance or interference?
8) Identify the obstacles stopping these rings axially and/or radially.
9) Are the outer rings mounted with clearance or interference?
10) Identify the obstacles stopping these rings axially and/or radially.
Topic 3.3: Worm gear (with rack)
- Model available: adjustable wrench.
Questions:
- Turn the screw 4 times. What is the displacement of the rack?
- Determine the reversibility of the system (related to the helix
angle). Experimentally test it.
Additional Topic: Worm and Gear
- Worm wrench, view the resources:
Here we study the wheel/screw transmission.
