Brief Character Sketch of Mrs Pumphrey
Mrs Pumphrey was a rich but eccentric lady. She was an ignorant kind of person. She had a pet dog
Tricki, whom she loved more than anything. Her way of showing love was very different. She overfed
Tricki. She showed her concern by giving him rich and extra diet between meals which finally made
Tricki ill. She couldn’t bear Tricki doing exercise. She thought that it would make Tricki tired while it
was necessary for him.
She pampered her pet which had a wardrobe of clothes for every season, different bowls for each
meal, toys and what not. Her way of loving was not normal. But she was also a kind- hearted lady
who finally burst into tears while parting with her dog. She had all human qualities as she didn’t
forget to thank Mr Herriot at the end.
Brief Character Sketch of Tricki
Tricki is thoroughly pampered by his mistress Mrs Pumphrey. He has become hugely fat, like a
bloated sausage with a leg at each comer. His eyes, bloodshot and rheumy, stares straight ahead his
tongue lolled from his jaws. He is greedy and never refuses food. His mistress gives him some little
extras between meals to build him up, some malt and cod-liver oil and a bowl of Horlicks at night to
make him sleep.
Above all, he gets cream cakes and chocolates. To make things worse he had been doing no exercise.
When Tricki is sent to Vet. Hospital, the entire staff of Mrs Pumphrey’s house rush to bring his day
bed, his night bed, favourite cushions, toys and rubber rings, breakfast bowl, lunch bowl, supper
bowl. It all shows that Tricki has an affluent living.

the condition of Tricki, he is worried. He warns the dog's mistress of the consequences of over
feeding the dog but she loves the dog so much that she can't change her ways. Mr Herriot's kindness
and compassion compels him to do something for the dog. He admits the dog in his clinic and gives
him proper food and enough exercise to help him get back in shape.

Brief description on Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela, the first Black president of South Africa, after more than 3 centuries of white rule,
celebrated very vividly the grand ceremony of the first democratic non-racial government. Being
sworn in, he said radiantly that “Never, never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again
experience the oppression of one by another”. He pays homage to the freedom fighters like Oliver
Tambo, Luthuli, Yusuf Dadoo. They were men of uncommon courage, wisdom and generosity. He
regards the death of thousands of people who sacrificed their lives for the cause of courage. It is not
the absence of fear but the victory over it. No man is born with harassment rather love which comes
natural to the human heart. He says every man has his duties to his family, to the community and to
his country to perform honestly

his students and didn’t allow much talking in the class. Ultimately, he assigned Anne to write an

him. He was a transformed man now. He allowed Anne talking and never assigned her any extra
homework again.
Ausable: He is a different kind of secret agent. Generally, secret agents that are described in
detective books and shown in films, are very smart and gun-friendly. Wine and dark-eyed beauties
are associated with them. However, Ausable doesn’t present such a romantic picture. He is very fat
and sloppy. Physically, he may be fat but mentally he is very agile and quick-witted. He knows all the
tricks of his trade. He is very quick to react and can cook up stories that may fit in all kinds of
situations. He convinces even the crafty Max that there is a balcony below the window of his room
Max: Max is a secret agent and a rival and enemy of Ausable. He is slender, a little less than tall. He
appears crafty and has a countenance of a fox. There is nothing especially menacing about him
except his pistol. He enters Ausable’s room to take away a very important paper concerning some
new missiles.
. Fowler: Fowler is a young and romantic writer. He wants to write a book on detectives. Fowler
forms a very romantic and grand picture of a secret agent in his mind. He finds Ausable not cracking
pistols or surrounded by dark-eyed beauties like James Bond. He feels let down after meeting
Ausable.
