Lesson 4 - Multiple Bounce Rolls

Orchestral Fantasies

Orchestral rolls are also known as "Buzz Rolls , " "Pressed Rolls" or "Multiple
Bounce Rolls." When rolls are notated in rudimental drumming music, it is assumed that
double stroke rolls are used. If the roll is to be played as a buzz roll then a "z" is used on
the note stem instead of slashes. In an orchestral setting, it is usually assumed that the
rolls are pressed or buzzed.

An orchestral roll is a drummer's way of playing a sustained note. To execute this, it

is best to play off center on the drum head. This is where the drum head has the most
resonance and will give the best illusion of a sustained note.

Orchestral rolls should generally be the same hand speed regardless of the tempo.
So, a quarter note roll at a fast tempo will get fewer strokes than a quarter note at a
slower tempo. I find that odd numbers work best for orchestral rolls, especially longer
rolls. Try to end on the opposite hand that you start with when playing orchestral rolls.
This gives the illusion of no pulsation because it is hard for the listener to detect the odd
number. When pulsing rolls in 16th notes it is very easy for the listener to detect the
pulsation, which is what we are trying to avoid when playing orchestral rolls.
The etude in this lesson uses dead strokes where the stick is pressed into the drum
head to create a slight buzz, but is a rather short articulation. The two note heads
together in the second and third lines of the etude means both sticks play dead strokes at
the same time. The length of the buzz is up to the performer and may change depending
on the context of the music.
