Department: EEE
Section: A1
Objective:
The objective of this project is to design and implement a single pulse
generator using the 555 Timer IC in monostable mode. The circuit will
generate a single, fixed-duration pulse in response to an external
trigger signal. This single pulse can be used in applications like delay
circuits, pulse width modulation etc.

Description:
A single pulse generator is a circuit that produces one pulse of a specific
width when triggered. The pulse width is predetermined by the choice of
external components connected to the 555 Timer IC, specifically a
resistor R and a capacitor C.

In this project, the 555 Timer will be configured in monostable mode,

where it stays in a stable low state until an external trigger is applied.
Upon receiving a trigger ( a button press or signal), the output goes high
for a time period T, after which it automatically returns to the low state.
The duration of the high output pulse is controlled by the values of the
resistor R and capacitor C, following the equation:

T=1.1*R*C

Where:

 T is the pulse duration (in seconds),

 R is the resistance (in ohms),
 C is the capacitance (in farads).
Components Required:
o 555 Timer IC
o Resistor R
o Capacitor C
o Trigger input (push-button or external signal)
o Power supply
o LED (optional, for visual indication of the output pulse)

Discussion on Possible Output:
The single pulse generator will produce a single output pulse with the
following characteristics:

 Pulse Width (Duration): The duration T of the output pulse is

determined by the external resistor R and capacitor C. For
example, if R=10kΩ and C=100 μF the pulse width is calculated
as:

T=R*C*1.1=1.1s

This means the output remains high for 1.1 seconds after the
trigger is applied.

 Single Pulse Generation: After receiving a trigger signal, the

output goes high for the calculated time period T, and then it
automatically returns to its low state. This ensures that only one
pulse is generated for each trigger, regardless of the length of the
trigger signal.

 Visualization of Output: The output can be observed on an

oscilloscope as a square pulse or, if connected to an LED, as a
brief blink for the duration of the pulse. The width of the pulse can
be adjusted by changing the values of R and C.
