2 Fig. 2.1 shows a piece of chromatography paper. It has five different food colourings spotted on it
labelled A, B, C, D and E. Spot Z is a colouring that contains poisons and so should not be used
in foods.
The colourings were separated into their components using chromatography with an ethanol
solvent. The resulting chromatogram is shown in Fig. 2.2.
