Problem 7 2 SI Small office bldg

Equations

Problem 7.2 SI A small office building has four zones served by a central air handler. The number of people and corre-
sponding circulation flow rates for each zone are given in the table below. Determine the total and zone ventilation flow
rates (cfm)
a) Following the ASHRAE compromise procedure. Determine whether all zones meet the recommended ventilation flow
rate
b) Ensuring that all zones have the minimum recommended ventilation flow rates
c) Draw some conclusions from your analysis.
Determine the standard flow rate for office buildings from Table 7.5

V̇Std = 10 L/s recommended fresh outside air per person (1)

(a) Set up a Lookup Table with the zone number, number of people, and circulation flow
rate Input the values into arrays
for i = 1, 4 (2)

Np,i = Lookup(‘lookup 1’ , i, ‘N p’ ) (3)

V̇c,i = Lookup(‘lookup 1’ , i, ‘V dot c’ ) L/s (4)

end (5)

Determine the required ventilation flow to each zone based on the standard
Determine the ratio (Z) of standard ventilation flow to the circulation flow
for i = 1, 4 (6)

V̇v,std,i = Np,i · V̇Std L/s (7)

V̇v,std,i
Zi = (8)
V̇c,i

end (9)

Determine the fraction for the critical zone

Zcrit = max (Z1..4 ) Zcrit = 0.3333 (10)

Determine the total circulation flow and the X and Y parameters

⇣ ⌘
V̇c = Sum V̇c,i , i = 1, 4 L/s V̇c = 1055 [L/s] (11)
⇣ ⌘
Sum V̇v,std,i , i = 1, 4 X = 0.2559
X= (12)
V̇c
X Y = 0.2774
Y = (13)
1 + X Zcrit

1
Determine the total ventilation flow rate based on the ASHRAE Recommended procedure
V̇OA = Y · V̇c L/s (14)

Determine the ventilation flow rate delivered to each zone and compare to the recommended value
for i = 1, 4 (15)

V̇v,act,i = Y · V̇c,i L/s (16)

V̇v,act,i
Ratioi = (17)
V̇v,std,i

end (18)

(b) If the minimum recommended air flow were to be provided to each zone, then the ventilation flow would need to be able
to meet the requirements of the zone with the highest outdoor air fraction. The highest fraction is

Zmax = max (Z1..4 ) (19)

The total ventilation flow would then be

V̇max = Zmax · V̇c L/s (20)

Using the ASHRAE compromise procedure, the total ventialtion flow rate is about 65 % of that needed to provide the
recommended flow to each zone
For zone 1 with the highest recommended ventialtion flow rate, the ASHRAE compormise procedure provides only 65 %
of the recommended value

Solution Summary

V̇c = 1055 [L/s] V̇max = 351.7 [L/s]

V̇OA = 292.7 [L/s] V̇Std = 10 [L/s]
X = 0.2559 Y = 0.2774
Zcrit = 0.3333 Zmax = 0.3333
