Theme B: Form and function Level of Organisation: Organisms
Section B Structured questions (14 marks)
5. Explain the role of each of the following in the transport of water in the xylem.
(6 marks - 2 for each)
Factor Role in the transport of water in the xylem.
Lignified walls of
xylem vessels
Pits in the walls of contain
porous membranes that allow water to
pass ,
while
they block
xylem vessels
other
molecules & allow for the continuous flow of water
Lack of end walls in
the xylem vessels
6. An investigation was carried out to investigate a possible relationship between BMI (body
mass in Kg/height in m2) and the increase in pulse rate on exercise. A group of 17-year-old
pupils measured their BMI. Their resting pulse was then measured manually on their carotid
artery by the experimenter. They walked on a treadmill at 4km/hr for 5 minutes and their
exercise pulse was measured immediately. The percentage increase in pulse rate on exercise
was calculated and plotted against BMI as shown in the graph below.

The investigator decided that two of the data points were outliers caused by unreliable pulse
measurements. When these outliers were eliminated, the graph obtained below was obtained.
