Reflection Paper
Write an essay reflecting on the following:
Can a school exist without a curriculum? Why or why not?
As a future teacher, how important is a curriculum to you?
Curriculum as a field of study has been characterized as elusive, fragmentary, and confusing,
ergo it is a dynamic field (Hunkins, 2018), even as complicated as it may sound, a curriculum is the
blueprint, goal system, and the backbone of an entire school and/or academic institution. This makes
us realize how indeed an important a curriculum is. It is certainly true that learning can take place
without a curriculum, it takes places everywhere whether it may be inside or outside any learning
institution, however the curriculum guides the learning as per se, as it is anchored on different
philosophies, missions, visions, objectives,, and goals, designed to be implemented, it may be true
that learning can take place in various locations, anytime, and anywhere, but it is through curriculum
that guides this learning and fully realizes and maximizes what learning should be reached, and this
is the job of most academic institutions, and this is why, a school cannot do without a curriculum, as
schools and academic institutions are tasked with providing knowledge in a constructive, systematic,
efficient, and effective way, and this all is done through the school curriculum.
As a future teacher in the field of social sciences, and being a pre-service teacher, the
curriculum is a significant aspect of my future career, and even in this current one. It is proven
important that a curriculum is indeed vital and essential in any academic institution, as it provides the
goals, the systems, the subjects, and everything else that should be followed and take place for a
conducive location of learning, it is through the curriculum that determines the track of any school and
this is why it is definitely essential in learning, as this would give not only me, but also future teachers
as well a sense of where we are, and where we should be going that is critical to our students.
Even in the sense of being a pre-service teacher, the curriculum is also an important aspect.
For example, the curriculum has many types, with support curriculum as being one of them, it is
thanks to support curriculum where it aids in the lessons, and discussions that any professor
provides, other than this, the syllabus itself is another good example of a curriculum that is crucial to
mostly all types of students.
A school can provide knowledge with or without the curriculum, but it is thanks to the
curriculum that the school has a system to follow, and a structure to lean on, to maximize all learnings
possible to be provided to its constituents. The same goes for being a future teacher, the curriculum
provides a sense of direction, which is indispensable in the field of education as it gives meaning to
what should be learned, and how it should be learned.
