Panama Canal

Study Questions
or Web Quest
Teacher Directions:
Make copies of the webquest handout so that you
have enough for your students. You may choose to
have them work with a partner. If you prefer, you can
project it on a screen so students can see it and work
on it from their computer or desk.

Students go to the websites and answer the

questions on the document. I would allow mine to
answer the questions using a Word doc or a Google
Pages doc and then send it to me electronically, but
you can also just have them write down their answers
with paper and pencil.

I have included a key for you to check the answers.

Key
1. Panama Canal is located near the center of the country of Panama in Central
America.

2. The Canal Zone is the strip of land, about 16 miles wide, on either side of the
Panama Canal. It was controlled by the United States as a territory until 1977.

3. Years ago, before it was built, ships would have to travel around the Southern
end of South America to cross from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, a
distance of about 15,600 miles.

4. The United States government appointed chief engineer George Washington

Goethals.

5. The disease yellow fever, which is spread by mosquitoes, was a major problem
during construction.

6. Panama gave the United States rights to lease the land after the United States
helped them gain independence from Columbia, but it was not a lease that
could be renewed indefinitely.

7. The climate is hot, rainy, and tropical.

8. Although it only takes from four or five hours for a ship to go through the
fifty-two mile canal without hold-ups, it often takes a whole day, for ships have
to wait in line for their turn to go through the locks.

9. Panama City and Colon

10. The United States had control of the canal from 1903, when construction
began. It was opened in August, 1914. The United States controlled the Canal
Zone until 1977. It was then jointly governed by Panama and the United States
until 1999, when Panama took full control.
